PTO & Battery?

Hey guys,
I'm troubleshooting my PTO. But first, I have a 06 2544, original battery which in this season requires me to charge it the night before for it to crank. Yesterday I took it out to mow. It BARELY cranked up. What gets me is the PTO, it only works if the battery meter on the readout shows a strong voltage... then shuts off after a few seconds.

So question is, besides the alternator, does the battery need to be in good shape for the PTO to start and run?

Yes.

That will depend on the particular engine. Some engines come with low amp alternator, and others like my Kohler, has a high amp alternator. If you have the same cranking amps as the original battery, it should crank and provide enough amps to the PTO, and battery charging. Sounds like you have a weak battery. Maybe the engine alternator is not charging. If it is a new battery, it could start the engine, and maybe run the PTO for a while, but if the battery is not charging, then it will give out on you. After the engine quits on you, check the battery voltage.

Thanks for the reply - these are my thoughts exactly. The battery will charge after a good mowin', but I haven't mowed in 2 weeks (houston area drought). TIme for a new battery I suppose!

JJ qestion similar, mouse ate the wire that runs to the spark plug. tried to find altinator replacement in the manual but there is no part number. So we have to charge the battery before every mowing and having problems with PTO disengaging and stretching the deck belt, via deck belt falls off frequently. 6 yr old CC super lt 1154

Not familiar with that particular tractor, but check the belt tension on the alternator and ALL electrical connections. Be sure your battery terminals are clean also and use some dielectric grease on them.
