PTO adapter help

I have a heavy duty 6 foot bush hog on a cat-1 40 hp tractor. I want to use my bush hog on a cat-2 100+ hp tractor. I will be able to make a way to hook the cat-1 implement to the cat-2 tractor.

My question is, since the pto shaft on the bigger tractor is bigger, can I use some sort of a pto adapter? Also would this mess up my bush hog hooking it to a tractor with more rpms or would I just run the bigger tractor at a lower rpm to match the smaller tractor?

Any help would be appreciated since I have not done this kind of thing before,

That I don't know. If the bigger tractor is 540 will I be able to use an adapter?

Sounds like he is trying to hook up to a 1000 rpm shaft?? I would not do that, however, I would put the 540 shaft back in the tractor. Ken Sweet

The JD is a bigger tractor and the pto shaft is bigger than the one on my massey ferguson. I have seen these pto adapters around that you slide over the bigger shaft and it converts it to the smaller size. Allowing me to hook the smaller bush hog to the larger tractor.

Will this work? Something like this:

If that is in fact the adapter that will work, it looks like you have a really old bush hog with a smaller PTO shaft connect. It is probably a 1-3/8" to 1-1/8" adapter. This should be OK. Notice how both ends are 6 spline.

What is critical is the PTO speed. Look at the PTO shaft on the bigger tractor. If it has 6 splines, you should be OK at 540 RPM. If it has 20 or 21 splines, it is a 1000 RPM PTO and SHOULD NEVER be connected to a 540 RPM implement -- which your bush hog is.

Thanks. That's what I didn't know. The bush hog is prolly 15 year old bush hog brand. Don't know the model.

Just check the inside diameter of the brush hog. It should be standard 1 3/8 inch ID with 6 splines. If it is 1 1/4 6 spline, you will need to change the back to standard. Ken Sweet

I know it is 6 spline. Not sure on the size as I'm not there to measure right now. The bush hog hooks up fine to my Massey Ferguson 1540 if that helps.

Man, I thought this stuff was more standard. The more searching I do the more confused I get!
