At least on the YM's, Yanmar's shop manuals are so good, and the tractors are so simple, that someone with mechanical sense can fix anything. This would include most farmers.

But I wonder how much specialized test equipment is needed to troubleshoot and calibrate modern electronics-based control systems. These may need more professional dealer support.

I'm thinking how just the electronic 3-point controls introduced 20 ? years ago are a total mystery to anyone who can't read the Japanese language manuals.

I see were thinking alike on this one.

Good point. But on the other hand I have faith in the ingenuity of young mechanics. That much $$ for a tool is an imbalance of riches that won't last forever. In fact, I'd be surprised if there weren't young mechanics working on how to get around that software problem right now, this very evening.

Mechanics love an interesting problem, and the rewards for solving this one are large. The problem with getting any new tool into profitable circulation has always been the time and money needed. But today, social networking such as TBN already provides the perfect distribution vehicle.

Consider this: It might be to Yanmar's advantage to release the diagnostic software themselves. Then it would be guaranteed to be more accurate, and Yanmar probably couldn't come up with a better advertising tool....all at no cost to them.

Looked at a new yanmar a while back. 47 HP. 35 K !!
Seems to be a nice tractor, but they are allowing a small lawnmower shop to sell these things. I really doubt they could even service this tractor.
Reason I say this is, when I was talking to the guy about the tractor, he said they have only been selling them for a few months.
I ask him if they were able to install a grapple attachment on the tractor. He looked at me kinda funny and said, what is a grapple ?
I just and walked out .

It kind of depends on the dealer. Most small time dealers are their own mechanical department....and most the ones I've known are pretty much mechanically smart. It's not rocket science; just a tractor. If he can work on other mechanical machinery then working on tractors is pretty much a matter of getting any specialized tools needed. I had a small repair shop for a few years; we worked on just about anything and I don't recall being stumped by any mechanical system. I know that I was sure amazed a few times, though.

I'm a pretty good mechanic myself. These new tractors have codes just like autos, but don't use the same codes. OBD codes only provide a symptoms of a problem. You have to determine which part is causing the problem.

Example :I had a vehicle that was giving a bad EGR code. EGR tested good. The problem was a small tube leaving the intake manifold going to the EGR was stopped up with carbon, causing the OBD to give a code for EGR

I have no problem with young mechanics.This guy was middle aged, and didn't even know what a grapple was.

Wonder how many here that have no clue as to what a grapple is ?
I don't sell tractors for a living, but not only do I know what a grapple is, I installed my own.

Yeah, My take is, if you don't know what a grapple is, you shouldn't be selling servicing tractors

If there are rebates on the tractors. He never mentioned it. Probably as clueless about the rebates as he was about the grapple

I don't know.. everyone else in this neck of the woods call them grapples. Now, had I used the term claw, I could have understood him maybe not knowing what a claw is.

Everything breaks. If that tractor breaks, my concern would be him being able to work on the tractor.

I recently bought a Kobota Z turn diesel from kubota dealer. This dealer also sells kubota tractors. He is a young guy that took over the family business. They have a full (large) service dept. and was able to handle the engine replacement when my new kubota z turn engine blew. So things can go very wrong with anything mechanical. I really don't believe this guy selling yanmar tractors would be able to handle something like this had it been a tractor instead of a lawn mower. For this reason, I moved on .
