YM1610 2WD
Hi,

Just taken delivery of my YM1610 for our small holding. I've taken it for a spin and really like the powershift. I'm a complete novice when it comes to tractors (or any type of mechanics) and was hoping for a bit of advice.

I have ordered new fuel, air and oil filters in order to give it a service, but have the following questions

1) What type of oil do I use ?
2) How much oil do I use ?

Then onto the electrics - the red light is on below the battery light, what does this mean ?

Also, what type of battery do I use as it definitely needs replacing (existing is a small low budget type)

Sorry for so many question, but any help would be appreciated. I guess more question to follow !

Thanks in anticipation

Welcome to TractorByNet!

I moved your thread to the Yanmar forum. :)

welcome :welcome:.On the battery. get 1 with high cranking amps. This usually helps when trying to start/crank a diesel.I can't help on how much fluids your unit takes.I can tell you that you need a diesel rated oil. 15 w 40 is the weight oil I use

You may want to try and order a manual for future reference. Someone with a model close to yours may jump in and answer your other questions.I would have to see a pic of the light to be able to tell you what it is . 1 should be for oil 1 for temp 1 for alternator / battery charging

Welcome aboard. :welcome: As far as fluids go here is a good article. Fluid & Oil Types I don't know the exact amount of oil your 1600 will hold but around 4 quarts, then check the dipstick and fill till full, running the engine to fill the filter, then let the oil settle and check again.

If you have the 4 warning lights that I think you do then the one you are talking about is the radiator over flow bottle level light. When the overflow bottle gets a low level that light will come on. The bottle will have a level mark on it.

Many different opinions on batteries. I can tell you if you have cold weather there in Leicestershire you would want to get one with good cranking amps. If no cold weather these Yanmars really crank off easy when using the compression release correctly. I don't necessarily use the small but do go with a low budget type. Talking like a Walmart battery.

my motto with batteries in diesels is" stick in the biggest one that'll fit in the hole!" :D

Thanks Guy's,

Off to our local store for the battery and oil. Filters should arrive in the next few days so all good by the weekend.

The water level on the overflow bottle is now correct and the light is out !

I have a few more questions

1) The warning light at the bottom right (voltage sign) is on, what does this mean ? I've checked the wiring connections and all seems good. Could it be the voltage regulator or alternator ?
2) What is the 2 pin plug that comes off the wiring harness next to the battery ? It's not connected, any ideas ?
3) Temp Gauge doesn't seem to be working. Is it a case of ordering a new sensor ?

As you can see from the above I am a complete beginner.

Thanks again

The bottom right light is your charge light. There are numerous reasons it could be on. Could be a loose wire, fuse not making contact, etc, etc. If you have an inexpensive volt meter you can do a little trouble shooting. Start by checking the battery terminals with the tractor not running. A good battery should have somewhere around 12.6 dc volts. Then crank up at 1800 or so rpm and check the battery. Should be 13+ dc volts. We can get into more specifics after you check your output voltage.

I believe the two pin plug by the battery is your battery electrolyte level indicator. It has been unplugged because the battery's used here do not have that feature. The bottom left warning light is the indicator for that.

Might just make sure your wire is plugged into the temperature sensor. It is located up high on the left side of the water pump housing. Yanmar Tractor Parts: TEMPERATURE SENDING UNIT - (FOR GAUGE STYLE)

Thanks for your quick reply Winston1.

I have just had a lunch break and checked the battery on a volt meter and this is what I got-
Tractor not running - 12.9 dc volts
Tractor running at 1800rpm - 12.53 dc volts

Checked the wire coming off the temperature sensor and it seems to be connected ok. Thanks for the link, might just add a sensor to my Hoyes order for the sake of $15.

100_6308.jpgI would next switch the voltmeter to ac volts and check the wires coming off the dynamo. Running the 1800 or so rpm you should get 20 or so ac volts. If not the dynamo is bad which I doubt. If that checks ok switch the volt meter to dc and stick your red probe down to the red and yellow wires shown in this attached picture. Touch the ground probe to ground on the tractor. You should be reading 13+ dc volts there. If not, your regulator is probably bad. Let's see how this comes out.
