That is interesting. Never imagined that a property line would not extend out into the road somehow.

All of our property lines stop at the road right of way. And a good thing, too, else they would expect us to pay for the maintenance. On the other hand, we do have such a thing as riparian rights, where property lines extend out into the water on some waterfront lots.

In addition to driving pins at the property corners, a proper survey is supposed to determine a few things that may have changed since the last time the place was surveyed.

Easements. These could effect the value of the property. The Title Insurance Company needs to know what easements are on the property.

Encroachments. Has the neighbor build a road or a fence on your land?

Setbacks. Has the landowner built a building or addition in the required setback zones, thus creating a regulatory problem?
