When I mow with my 4010, I generally keep it just under max throttle--usually just at or below the 540 RPM indicator.

For all other uses, I generally run in the low to mid 2000 RPM range.

Eventually you will get a feel for when more is needed.

Run the mower at the rated RPM for the PTO. This will be indicated on you Tach. This may not be 'wide open' throttle but just slightly below it. The engines are designed to run all day at this RPM and it is needed to get the best performance from your mower.
