Proper PTO RPM?? Will too low hurt the tractor?

Hmm, very interesting discussion. Obviously we all have varied opinions as it should be but one size shoe does not fit all. Here is my justification to the statements I made earlier for what's worth.

Obviously I can use my spoon and fill it all I can and keep shoving it down, but I don't because I want to enjoy my meal and more importantly not make a scene:D:D and wouldn't give it any thoughts if my spoon is going to last longer or not. When I'm driving in the mountains in Colorado, I speed up or slow down to provide adequate power that I need to safely get from point A to B. Again, if I'm carrying a suitcase from point A to B that say weighs 60 lbs I would not need to use an 18 wheeler to do the task, a lowly Honda Civic would do the task perfectly adequately.

On my earlier garden example, my garden is a whopping 15' wide by 150' long, my garden plot has a good soil and no rocks at all, at my creeping speed and 1500 rpm the tiller is whipping the ground to a fine powder without slightest trace of engine bogging down. Obviously I can increase the rpm and ground speed to speed the things up. That may speed up things may be about 5 minutes more from 15 minutes to 10 minutes. I do my garden tilling once a year and really could not careless if it takes me 15 minutes or 10 minutes. I would most likely change things if I were making money and time was of the essence.

I firmly believe in conservation of resources anywhere I can short of sacrificing desired result.
my 2 cent:)

I don't know crap, but I have a buddy that broke a crank in a 580 Case TLB because of low RPM as per Case.

If I have something hooked to the tractor PTO I run it at PTO speed. The tractor manufacturer recommends this and the PTO implement manufacturer recommends this. Both the tractor engine and implement are designed and tuned to do this for a reason. The 540 PTO speed has been used for decades. Now we decide to "save" our equipment by not using this recommended PTO speed?

Hmm, Your car let say is designed for 100 MPH and odometer says the same. Do you drive 100 MPH at any given time and condition?

First off, the car *should* be design for 55 mph... I guess 65 now... and I bet it would last longer... the same goes for my chainsaw, I never run it wide open and I think it is 20 years old. Would running it at lower rpm hurt anything? I was told, since I have HST, that it should run at or near pto speed to help with cooling of the oil. Doesn't running the tractor that high make the oil hot? I don't know...

The 540 PTO speed has been worked out , driving a 1.93-1 or whatever slasher/bush hog gear box to give a 16000-20000 foot per minute blade tip speed (depending on blade length) . If a guy can get a satisfactory grass cut at a lower blade tip speed because the grass is not long or not thick , so be it . Theres no problem with doing that , and using a Diesel engine low in the rev range at around 1400 (peak torque) revs will not hurt it at all as long as it is not lugging and creating high exhaust temps .

If you run at PTO speed you don't have to worry about lugging or high exhaust temps.
