I've got the cover off the chain drive on our roto tiller and its got some rust on the inside. I want to clean it up and paint it before reinstalling it and filling it with synthetic gear oil. What kind of paint should I use that will tolerate the gear oil?

Why paint it? The oil, when circulating will keep the rust gone. It's inactivity that lets the oil sit and condensation rust above the oil. I mean, after all, engines are not painted on the inside oil spaces.

I'd tend to agree. You dont want paint flakes contaminating your lube.

Is the case cast iron? If so glyptal paint works well, it's the same paint used inside engines and machinery to aid in sealing the castings and help with drainback. If it's steel any decent (no latex based) paint should work if properly prepped and applied.

The way I look at it paint flakes are a lot less abrasive then rust flakes floating around.

Red Glyptal is an old time engine builders trick. Thats what Id recommend if anything,
