Several people around town have been flying the flag off the back of there truck. It is often accompanied by one or several additional flags, which might be a different conversation.

Generally it is in tatters, frayed at the edges, and catches on the tailgate when stopped. It doesn't seem very respectful to me.

Does anyone have any resources to look at about proper flag display, the stuff i have found thus far doesn't explicitly forbid this type of display but never spells it out either. If i could find a pamphlet i could hand out that would be ideal.

I don't pretend to be an authority on flag presentation... right or wrong, I've done the same thing on my motorcycle. That seemed to be okay when riding with the Patriotic Guards. But what I won't allow myself to do is to buy an American flag that was made anywhere other that the good ole USA. That's just me, but it's important to 'me'.

My wife and I have a couple of rental properties. The tenants asked us (through her) to install flagpole brackets on the houses so they could display the flag.

I told them no, unless they were willing to commit to bringing in the flag at sunset or illuminating it at night.

My wife thinks I'm being a jerk.

Her position is if they want to display the flag, we should support it, regardless of ettiquite.

Several years ago when the eldest daughter was in high school we were in Nashville Tennessee to take the girls to Opryland. When we got back into the car the oldest wanted the map (pre GPS days). She wouldn't tell us why but gave me instructions to turn here, drive there, and finally had me turn into a large military cemetery. She had me drive around the cemetery for a while, it was huge. Finally she directed me up to a monument with a U.S. flag flying from the pole. She got out and stood in the hot sun staring at the monument and flag for a couple minutes then got back in. She would not tell us what she was looking for or what was significant about that place or who was buried there until she got seated. Seems that she had to research and write a paper about flag etiquette for a class. That particular grave was, at the time, one of three places the flag could be legally and properly flown day or night in all weather without illumination or any care. It was the grave of the man who first called the Stars and Stripes "Old Glory" in a newspaper article. For some reason that really struck a nerve with that seventeen year old and to this day she will not hesitate to correct somebody mistreating the flag.

Nothing surprises me anymore...

Here the flag is often in tatters and now many flag poles no longer fly the flag as some might find it offensive.

One of the older downtown business always put out a pedestal flag when they were open for business... someone complained to the city after decades and the owner was told to stop with the flag unless he applied and was granted a sign permit... didn't set well and he kept putting it out each day and racked up a stack of citations...

In the end... enough WWII vets got together to educate the city council as to the difference between a sign and the flag of the United States of America... the ordinance was amended exempting the display of the US Flag providing it did not create or contribute to a hazardous condition.

Growing up every home had a flag displayed on holidays.... now I'm the only one that does... there was a brief respite right after 9/11 when flags were bought and shelves bare...

A neighboring community flag that has been there since WWII is under siege... many complaints from people saying it is offensive... thing is the postage sized plot of land where it stands is private property surrounded by public land... not successful in having the flag removed the group got an injunction to have the power removed saying there was no permit for illumination and even having a meter for elecricity there was no easement of permit on file.

Sometimes I really think are best days are behind us...

Our government has abandoned us. Sold us downriver. Decimated the manufacturer base and middle class. Lied & spied and holds us in contempt.
Golly gee, no one wants to fly it anymore.

Any guesses on who once said:

I still fly Old Glory properly on selected days. For me, I associate our flag with the people, not the government.
