Propeller shaft cover (FWD Shaft Cover)

Hello,
I have a 3110d that I just purchased and the propeller shaft cover has some holes in it. I plan on getting it replaced but didn't know if there is some damage internally I should expect. Some oil from the motor might have dripped in, is that going to be problem?

Are you referring to the front wheel drive shaft cover? If so, no way to answer your question, but there should be no engine oil in there.

Here are some pics. Yes, the front wheel drive shaft cover. In the manual, they refer to it as the propeller shaft cover.

And yes, I know its green. The guy that owned previous to me painted to look like a John Deere 1050. But it's definitely a Yanmar YM3110D.

As I would understand it, that is only a protective cover and the shaft is inside. (much like the plastic covers over the PTO shaft).

Holes would be there to allow water to drain out and if there is oil it is indicating that you have a seal that is defective at either end.
A couple of drips is not to be concerned with but a lot indicates a probable seal leak.
(that's why we check all fluids as per schedules)
Also, like on my tractor, whenever I change engine oil there is always some that gets onto/into that shaft cover.

It is my guess that you are probably OK and I would not bother replacing that shield.
Its job is mainly to keep the shaft from getting all tangled up with grass, hay twine and such. (barbed wire?)

The oil is dripping from what looks like the oil pan. Oil levels were good when I bought it and they are still good a week later with some light work. So its not a huge leak. I've owned cars that leak more oil.

I thought about putting something over the holes, but I'm waiting to see how much a new/used tube costs first. Not sure what caused the holes.

The holes were probably punched in to drain leaking trans oil or front end lube. That will probably be a tough part to find.

I wouldn't worry about the holes. The main purpose of that cover is to keep stuff from wrapping around the shaft and safety. You could probably weld the holes up in place but if you ever take it off that would be the ideal time to do so. You could patch with a little rubber and a couple of hose clamps.
