We lived in a small town for a year - Glennallen, AK. Doofy's stomping grounds - half way between Anchorage and Fairbanks. Yes - it got really damn cold there.
Our kitchen range was propane. In the winter - get up - flip a switch on the wall near the kitchen range. Turned on a heat lamp in the little shed that held the propane tank. Wait and listen..... About five minuets and you could hear the propane bubbling in the outside tank. Now you could turn on the range.
That year was an experience that I'm glad I had. Until you have to live in conditions such as that - you really don't understand what "tough" can mean.
Fortunately - in those type conditions - you have three choices. You adapt - you leave - you perish.
