I hear you on the mig not liking rusty metal. I have both stick and mig and the stick will burn through about anything depending on the rod you are using. Another thing about my mig is it needs a really good ground. I always grind a shiny spot for it.

For mild to fairly rusty metal I use a 4" angle grinder with a very heavy duty wire brush attachment in place of the disc. You can get shiny new looking metal in no time. After all, some of those junkyard wars/found objects are one of a kind AND priceless!! Lol
