Progress on my tractor\'s new home

Some progress is starting to show on my pole building. My friend Todd operating the JD4100, and me in the personnel lift. Here we are cutting off posts.

Re: Progress on my tractor\'s new home

Here we are hoisting the highest truss joist into position, with my Dad's loader tractor, and Todd in the Personnel Lift adjusting the safety chain. This was a 14 foot lift and we just reached it with some of Todd's creativity. The truss joists span 28 feet, side-to-side in the building, and 2x8 rafters span 10 feet from truss to truss, and from truss to front header, etc. Otherwise it is pure pole building.
More progress soon, hopefully.

Re: Progress on my tractor\'s new home

I am planning on building a barn in the near future. Just curious....Did you get a plan for this building or did you design it yourself? I like the idea of using the metal trusses. How does the roof go on top of them?

/w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif Notice that neither brave soul in the Personnel Lift is wearing a harness and lifeline! I know, I know, this isn't a commercial project or site. But I don't know that I'd want to be up there without a little more security! /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

Hope everything goes smoothly and safely for you and your friends! Good luck.

Re: Progress on my tractor\'s new home

I designed it. The simple rafters are bolted thru, and in the second attachment you can see small 4x4 angle iron segments of 1" long welded in position every 25 inches. This takes some planning but it makes for fun fast assembly and wind resistance. I am planning on using quarter-inch carriage bolts. If you can find the truss joist surplus like I did, it is a good system. Be sure to follow local codes.

Re: Progress on my tractor\'s new home

That's really nice!
I just bought a new Orange tractor and had no idea where to put it? I asked the discussion forum what to do with it and came to the conclusion that my old pole barn that I constructed in similar fashion to your new building would do fine. Looks Very similar.
The old (10 years old) sheep shack was never really finished and my tractor luckily fit. I had to cut some rafters and reinforced them with 2-inch angle iron but it came out O.K.
What makes the story funny was that I have an unemployed ME (aeronautical engineer) who was helping me. He was working at his brother's woodworking shop. He built a table and finished the sheep shack for the Kubota. I really did not have time to oversee the project so I let him "do his thing!" I found out later that he really has no clue what wood is worth and used quite a bit from the "Scrap pile" at the shop.
The result is that he made a bench and table for the sheep shack out of black walnut! He actually thinks I am going to store diesel fuel on black walnut counters!
This is 150 yards from anywhere. My dog is going to get as much appreciation of this fancy woodwork as anyone.
The good part is that I did not have to pay for the material. The bad part is that one of the other people in the workshop is going to faint when they see how much "Scrap" is missing.
I will not tell them where it went!

Re: Progress on my tractor\'s new home

Hi Jim,

Nice looking framing details. How far North is your building located? The rafters and columns seem plenty adequate. What is the capacity of your trusses? Standard k-series
steel bar joist would max out at 550 plf or 55 psf total load capacity with a 10' spacing. This would leave a 50 psf live load capacity. I do not know if truss joist products will yield as much load. Let me know the size and series, and I can let you know how much load the trusses can support.

Are you bearing the posts on concrete pads, or are the posts bearing directly on the soil?

Regards,

Dave

Re: Progress on my tractor\'s new home

Cool, look up the truss joists, that would be a great check on my assumptions. I won't tell you my conclusions till you formulate your own from the data. These are 16 inches tall, and span 28 feet. I don't know the series. I had that info, but don't remember where. The top cord is two pcs of 1/4x2x2 angle, the web is bent rod about 7/8", and the bottom cord is approx 5/16x2.5x2.5" angle. From memory. I could measure a pc if this doesnt fit the chart. When I looked them up it seemed obvious in the chart what size they were by the 16 inches tall and the 28 foot span. Maybe I will have to get you more infor tommorrow...
The 6x6 pressure treated posts are set 48" deep, and conveniently at that depth most of them are setting on sandstone. I know, that seems too good to be true, but that's how it worked out. The poles have a HUGE landscape spike driven into each of the four sides, up 6-10 inches from the bottom, sticking out of the pole 3-4 inches, and bent over a little so the pole fits the 12" hole better. Pole is dropped in, and mixed concrete poured in around to about a foot thick collar around the base of the pole. None necessarily under the pole. The spikes help the concrete bond to the pole. From what I have read, this should offer good bearing (even without the sandstone), good withdrawl resistance, and allow the pole to drain and not set in water its whole life. The hole is backfilled to the surface with 3/4" crushed rock.
Let me know what you find out about the TJoists, Thanks!

Re: Progress on my tractor\'s new home

Looks like you gentlemen have a great plan there.

No ladders or staging..that should cut down on the time building your shed. /w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif

Re: Progress on my tractor\'s new home

Just wanting to know about that personnel lift. Is that something that you made or purchased? If you bought it, do you know the manfacturer? I couldn't fab up something like that, not that good at welding. But, it sure would come in handy for all the work I have to do to my shop.

Look forward to more pics of your progress.

Thanks
