It became time to clean the UJoints for the PTO shaft on my Land Pride finish mower today. I had never removed the shaft, only greased it with some difficulty. I checked the owners manual and found no procedure to unlock the cones on each end of the shaft to reveal the yokes. The shaft is covered by a EuroCardan safety shield. Does anyone have a procedure to unlock the cones so that I may inspect the yokes?

I don't know the name of my shields but, they have 2 small nylon screws that you turn 1/2 turn then pull back on the cone. This exposes the u joint.

When I had to replace the shear bolt recently, I just cut the shield away with tin snips, as I couldn't find out how to remove it otherwise. After I did, I found the page in my LX4 manual that describes it. Don't know why they didn't refer to that page in the section on replacing the shear bolt.

On mine, you remove a little screw that keeps the shield from rotating (after you remove the chain that keeps the whole plastic mess from rotating). Then rotate the flared shield to where its "D" part lines up with a tab on the slender part. The flared shield is supposed to slide back then. I didn't do all this, as mine is nicely cut away to expose where the yoke and shear bolt are now.
