Gents.
I bought a 1715 ford/new holland '93 recently. When I received it, all 3 bulbs were pulled out of the sockets on the insturment panel and were hanging in back of the panel. I do not know which bulbs go with which sockets. They are color coded so that if someone looks under the hood of theirs they could tell me which colors are on the left, center and right. Also, two bulbs light when I turn on the key but one doesn't. Is that normal? I would greatly appreciate someone popping your hood and give me the colors and where they go.
Thanks;
Jim

Here is a wild guess, with no knowledge of that tractor. !) Bulb that does not light up = Temp. 2) of the other 2 Start the tractor and run for a minute, then shut off. 1st one to go out is battery, 2nd one that lags a couple seconds is the oil pressure, and that wire should be able to trace to the oil sender.

Thanks very much for your reply. That gets me much closer to the resolution of the problem. So in your opinion only 2 are SUPPOSED to light after turning on the switch. I thought one of them possibly didn't work. I will try your trouble shooting method.

Temp light only lights if the engine is overheated.

Thanks again for your reply. Definitely makes sense. What is confusing me is a statement in the Operators manual which says. "when the key switch is turned ON the oil pressure and charge indicator lights will come on". Just like you said.
But then down below it says "NOTE Make certain that all warning lights turn on for a moment when turning the key switch to the START position. If one of the warning lights does not turn on, the bulb may need to be replaced".
I read that as all 3 but perhaps it didn't mean that.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim, It never hurts to test the bulb when in doubt. Either use a tester or switch bulbs with one of the 2 that you know lights up. If it lights there it should be good. If it doesn't, replace the bulb. As per your book, set in the seat and turn on the switch a couple times while watching the bulbs, if it lights briefly as they say it is good, if no light do the switching of bulbs. Ray

Th oil sender unit is a normally closed switch by the action of an spring. The starting circuit has this switch wired in series, when you turn your key to on, electrical juice flows thru the loop and turn your light on. This is a proof positive that your wiring is okay. upon engine start the oil pressure developed turn the N.C switch to open (off/ no light) position against the spring indicating oil flow. I can't emphasize enough how important that is. So any time you start you need to be mindful of light coming on me monetarily and going off upon engine running. Your alternator also has a supervised circuit, a bit different than what I explained before but it indicates wiring is good and alt works if the light goes out. On oil pressure if upon engine start light stays on then you either have a faulty sender unit or no flow and either is bad. A simple continuity test, or a test light is enough to check your sending unit.

Ray and JC,
So do you both agree that only 2 lights turn on briefly out of the 3 when you turn the key?
Thanks,
Jim

What is the third light ? is it Temp gage? sometimes temp gage is only digital (on or off) , sometime it is only analog like what I have in the pic below and lastly can be both analog and a digital where the digital usually is referred to as "dumb light" as it only tell you you went beyond normal. Do you have a picture of your instrument cluster? it is obvious on mine that battery is indicating of charging system and the other symbol for oil pressure and a separate analog gage for heat.

JC,
There are 3 sockets for 3 lightbulbs to rest behind a red reflector. No other gauges except fuel.
The left is battery. The middle is coolant temp. the right is engine oil pressure warning. All the bulbs are working and two come on when I turn the key. Unfortunately the bulbs are very likely in the wrong positions.
Thanks again,
Jim
