Just finished changing my oil & fuel filter on my TC45D. Not the first time, but it IS the first time I have had problems getting tractor started following fule filter change.

Am nothing more than a passing mechanic, so am at a loss as to the fix. Am assuming I got air in the lines....manual says it is a self bleeding system, cranked it a few times, bowl is full of diesel, but not starting. I did remember the thread a few days back about a similar problem due to not having the tractor out of gear. Brakes on, tractor out of gear and still nothing.

Any suggestions for this frustrated Hoosier?

Paul

P.S. And of course, I did not bother to take the FEL off as changing the filters has been easy before.

Yes, leaving the loader on does make it harder. Since I learned this all (painfully) two weeks ago, let's review.

1. The tractor IS in neutral and the the brakes ARE set.

2. Did you turn the fuel back on at the fuel bowl?

3. When you first crank the engine, try to listen for the fuel solenoid to click. The fuel solenoid is located below and slightly to the rear of the injector pump. It is gray, round and about 3-4" long with a single wire attaching to it from the rear. Though it is hard I can hear mine click right before it starts to crank.

4. If the solenoid clicks then try the air bleed screw on top of the injector pump. Follow the hard rubber hose from the fuel pump to the front and on top of the injector. The is a small screw (10mm?) that connects the rubber hose to the injector. Undo this screw and crank the engine, you should see fuel squirt out. In fact with a full tank of gas, I can bleed this line without cranking the engine at all.

5. Ok, so it still won't start. Remove one of the large injector lines from the injector pump (one of the lines that goes from the block to the injector pump). You can now see if fuel comes out of the injector. DO NOT STARE DIRECTLY AT THE INJECTOR, but from the side crank the engine. You should see little sputs of fuel coming out of the injector. If you don't then I'd be highly suspicious of the fuel solenoid.

Let us know what you learn,

Peter

Paul, if the engine is turning over, it is not an interlock switch, but it might be the fuel solenoid as Peter mentioned. One time I turned my key on, but didn't immediately start my tractor and after a couple of minutes, I tried to start it, but the engine just turned over, but didn't start. I turned the key to OFF and then back to ON and it started immediately. The engine was warm, but without that glow plug, it still wouldn't start.

Since you just changed the fuel filter, you have to suspect that as a problem, but also, did you happen to clean your air filter? The inner filter can easily be reversed, cutting off all air to the engine. If you cleaned these filters, you might check your inner filter. That's about all the ideas I have. I hope you find the cause soon. I know you must be frustrated./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Paul:

Not knowing the type of filter is it possible to put in backwards ?

Peter & JimI:

Thanks for the advice. Am heading out the door to see if I can work through this now. Will let you know what comes of it.

Egon: Filter is on correctly, though when all the trouble started, I took bowl off to chack and make sure again even though it really can only go on one way.

Thanks Guys,

Paul

Okay, it is one of those days carried over from yesterday. And am I ever sorry for leaving the FEL on now! Keep telling myself that I am learning a lesson through this.

Anyway, have managed to bleed two of the injectors, but of course, only 17 mm wrench I have is a 'stubby'and no way will it and/or my short arms reach past the FEL to the back 2 injectors. Now am off to the Rural King or Sears to get a longer one (while the battery charges on the TC). Will keep ya posted.

Thanks again.

I finally gave up once on the 4000 when a neighbor said to pull it till it started. I don't know what damage it causes. Once pulled it and did'nt start , re bled and it started. Just something to think about before pushing it over the hill.

Peter:

Well, am beginning to think you may be right about the fuel solenoid. I never could here it click, but once I got the battery charged and removed the injector line and cranked.....nothing come outs.

At this point, am gonna wait and talk to the dealer tomorrow and see what he says.

IndianaPaul,

I don't blame you for calling the dealer. Here are a couple of other thoughts.

1. The fuel solenoid fuse is under the guages of the dash, it might be worthing checking that it is ok.

2. Have you tried starting the tractor while sitting in the seat? I doubt that the fuel solenoid is bad I think some safety system (or something) is keeping it from turning on. Have you tried running twelve volts to the solenoid just to see if it clicks? it is right behind the fuel bowl.

3. Did you bleed the air using the screw on top of the injector?

4. You could eliminate the entire operator safety system (and etc) buy connecting twelve volts to the solenoid by using a jumper cable or batter charger. Crank the engine, in just a few seconds fuel should be coming out of the injector (when the line is removed from the injector).

Feel free to e-mail me if you have more questions,

Actually Jinman, my tractor will crank but will not start (if I'm off it) if the brakes are NOT set. Strange in my opinion but I'm sure it is the case. At least when you are off the tractor the brakes MUST be set to start it.
