Price on a John Deere 111?

There's a local guy selling a John Deere 111 riding mower with a snow blower.

What's a good price on one of these?

Anyone had one? Good experience? Bad experience?

The 111 was one of JD's starter riding tractors made in the early to mid 1980's. To be honest it was not the greatest thing on earth, just your typical light duty rider with vertical Briggs engine. Unless immaculate I would not value the tractor alone anywhere over $200, the snow blower for it might be worth another $50. If you want a good classic Deere, go for at least a 200 series 210-216, they are a much heavier duty machine and are well respected, available from about $500-800 on the used market.

The guy says that you have to loosen a bolt on the air filter sometimes to get it started. Any ideas what that would be? Would it be something serious? Would it require anything more than just carb adjustments?

Probably nothing serious, the choke might not be working or the carb is out of adjustment. Those Briggs engines didn't last nearly as long as the cast iron Kohlers in the 200 series JD's, but the 111 frame pan is easy to retrofit other vertical shaft engines to. I guess the 111's held up good for a little LT, as the neighbor behind me has one he still uses. It runs like garbage and backfires a lot, but I don't have the heart to tell him it probably just needs a $1.00 ignition condenser to get it singing again
