Anyone thought about a pre-oiler system for the engine. My engine only has 10 hours so I would get a good return. Is it worth it? Is it viable? Anyone done this before? Paul Short, You copy this?

If you use your tractor frequently and have a fresh oil pump, it may not make much difference in terms of wear. The journal bearings tend to retain a film of oil on shutdown that's enough to prevent much wear at low RPMs until oil pressure comes up.

If you tractor sits, unused, for long periods (months or years) the preluber provides great protection.
If you use your tractor frequently and start and stop it frequently during each use I think you'd be buying some additional protection.
If your lube system's performance is weak and doesn't get up to working pressure at the journals quickly, then I think the preluber would be a great way to prolong engine life until the lube system problem gets discovered & fixed.

I have often thought about adding one to my car. You have to weigh the consequences of a failure of the system against it's benefits. It won't be much of a help if it dumps all your oil on the floor right before your engine starts up, or while you're out brushhogging.

This is a new BX2370 with only ten hours on it. No turbo or generator. Oil pressure is good, no issues. Just a tractor I am looking to keep running as long as possible. Perhaps this is overkill.

It would help, how much on a good running regularly used engine hard to say.

I would think cost would be the leading thought... how much for the system, dealer install or how hard to install ?

If the cost is reasonable, you can install it, then do it... Peace of mind is hard to quantify.

You are looking for a crisis. A turbo engine may require a prelub but in particular a trickle of oil through the turbo bearings to lube and cool for a few minutes after shutdown.
A standby generator that has to go from dead stop to full rpm, sync with the buss gear then take 100% load in 15 seconds. Those outfits do need coolant preheated to near operating temp 24/7. And a great hulking DC powered oil pump to place oil between the crank and bearings before the starter engages.

With good maintenance and careful use you will never wear your engine out. Save the money on the oiler and put it into oil and antifreeze changes. Also keep a careful eye on engine temperature as these small engines hate to be over heated.

OK Fellas, I get it. Its a boneheaded idea...

For what it is worth, I for one do not think it is a bad idea !

Pre-Oiling is a good thing, it will reduce wear on the bearings, rings and other moving parts.

On a gas engine you can add a pressure switch in the oil line tha will delay the engine starting until the oil pressure has built up to a predetermined pressure point but on a diesel I am not sure; I will need to look into that.

All in all I think it is a great idea if we can do it on the cheap and do it ourselves.

Post if you do anything.

Pre-oilers are a great idea. But my tractor is going to outlive me significantly - so no payback. :confused3:

I agree, a good idea but not needed. If you are worried about it, run a full synthetic diesel oil, flows much better during start up.

I had a pre-lube pump on a 86 F250 with an aftermarket turbo. I installed the pre-lube pump after adding the turbo. It was very handy for me as the truck would sit for months (sometimes 6 months at a time) without use. Using the pre-lube allowed sufficient oil to lube the turbo before start up.

The pre-lube pump saved my truck engine when the engine oil pump pickup tube cracked and sucked air in. I was able to switch the pre-libe pump on to get me home safely (long story). So for me, it proved to be invaluable and saved me a bunch of money.

On the tractor, I don't think it would be necessary - I don't have one on my tractor and don't see the need.

Once you've broken the engine in by using conventional oil for a few times, and at least 100hrs,consider switching to Schaeffer's x9000, 5w40 with 15- 20 percent bestline HD diesel engine treatment..its the best lubrication I've ever used and my oil samples come back with the lowest wear metals I've ever had.

Not using a block heater and synthetic oil in the winter will cause more wear than what a pre-oiler will save.

Good point, although I think switching to a full synthetic year round is even better. That's what I plan to when I change the oil my L4330. I don't even think I have any non-syn oil anymore, I've changed everything over to synthetic.

I use Shell Rotella T-6 5W-40 for everything except my Stihl/Husky chainsaws.
