Tractor
Ford 861
Hello, I just bought an 861 about a week ago to have a project to work on, never even driven a tractor before this. Everything works and it runs fine, but it needs a lot of work to make it the tractor I want it to end up as. I used some paint remover to try and uncover the serial number to find out what year it was built, the casting is a little boogered up in that area and I'm having trouble reading the serial number, but it appears to be 58 model (5 digit starts with a 3). In doing this, I also uncovered the model number and was surprised a little that it shows to be an 861-D, which I assume is suppose to mean it is a diesel? Just looking to see if this is correct, that the "D" means diesel or if it has some other meaning. This tractor has a gas engine. Also, the proofmeter is not there and there is no cut out for it to go into, there is just a continuous panel that looks like it came that way from the factory. Thanks for any light you can shed on what I bought! :confused2:

Either engine or trans has bee changed out. Yes D stands for Diesel. If dash panel has no hole for the proofmeter it's likely it was a 821 or 831 which didn't come with the proofmeter and tool box. They were the basic models some without 3pt and pto from the factory but could be added as a dealer option.
You can see the blank dash on my 631. The pto must have been added at the dealer. The tool box and optional rims I added.

Thanks, that makes a little more sense then. It's likely frankenstiened together from 2 different tractors then, the transmission on back from an 861 since it has 5 speed with two stage clutch, PTO, 3 point, tool box (which doesn't look original) and then the engine and sheet metal would indicate 821/831. It also has power steering, which I assume came from the factory, but who knows? I hope it doesn't make figuring out parts any harder than if it was born a gasser.

BTW, I like the paint job on your tractor, which paint did you use?

The more I look at it, the sheet metal is 800 series.... Really turning into a collection of parts on this tractor. Is there any way to tell what year or model the engine is from or does it even make a difference? I've read the 800 series has subtle differences with the carb and manifold, not much else. I guess what I'm getting at is, is this going to turn into an issue when sourcing parts or do they interchange parts across the 800 and 801 series tractors besides the carb/manifold/sheet metal? I don't care about having this tractor be a show tractor, but I'd like to have it in tip top mechanical shape and looking good. It's going to need some attention to get to that point. I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow.

Yes, post some photos of alll sides of the tractor. Some parts can be switch between the two models. Date code stamped on bottom half of engine block, rear center housing, trumpets. Parts get switched around all the time on these old tractors.
Paint is rustolemn cherry red close to 801 series. For 800 series I use rustolemn sunrise red. My tractor are worker not show queens. Don't cry if they get scratched up.

Board ate my post that took 10 minutes to thumb in :(

Post pics of engine and major section casting numbers

Don't fee about parts . From 55-64, easy to make parts swaps with very little magic needed.

Lets id engine first.

Could be 134, 172, or possibly 192, as the bolt pattern is the same. All engines 1953-1964 will bolt in.

I'll try to get some better pictures, these were just shot in the dark holding a flashlight in one hand and the camera in the other. I'll post the pictures of the engine, including numbers from the left and right side of the block. Then a picture of the number on the right side of the transmission. I didn't see a casting number on the rear end, but I'll look a little harder when I have some daylight.

If I get this right the pictures will be 1) Left side engine block numbers. 2)Right side engine block numbers. 3&4) side view of engine. 5) Numbers on right side of transmission casting.

The eaf # would appear to put it in the 53-57 time, and make it a 172
