Has anyone built a powered trailer like this?

This unit is very expensive.

Would the trailer wheels be driven by the BCS PTO or would the tractor have to be equipped with an additional drive shaft coordinated with the part of the transmission that power the tractor wheels?

I maybe totally wrong but Im thinking the tractor needs to be equipped with ground speed or syncronized pto ability. Heres a link to Earthtools and a description of a Grillo powered trailer. Just click on the haulage/transport tab. Then driven wheel utility trailer tab.

I believe the old Land Rover 101 Forward Control had a powered trailer.

I've never laid my hands on one, so this is purely anecdotal.: What I heard was that if you jack-knifed the trailer and didn't disengage its drive, then the trailer would tend to push, or pull your rear-end around in an alarming way.

In some european countries this kind of tractor/trailer combi was very common. In italy it is still. Here are some pics of european made units, few of them are older:

Cami is right with his thought, but the problem mostly came up in the 50`when they used trailers for 4wheel tractors, which had a driven axle from US ww II Trucks. The small tractor of this time sometimes need the extra drive to handle the trailer abroad.

As I remember the ferguson had a ground gear. I often wondered what kind of gear ratio it too to use a trailer and for that matter what kind of speed 540 would push a tractor. I think it would be pretty quick for field use.
