I just bought a 2000 4500 w/ a Power Reverser. What is the proper way to run a Power Reverser? I assume that I should be at a full stop when going from forward to reverse. Is this correct or can I be at a slow roll? If I shift at a slow roll will the wet clutch be abused & wear prematurely? Also, I assume that I can shift gears 1 thru 4 when on the move but must use the clutch. Finally, when shifting ranges, I assume that I must be at a full stop & use clutch.

Can someone please verify?

You can be moving even at a decent speed and switch direction without clutching. The faster you are going the more abrupt the direction change will be and of course it will be a little harder on the tractor.

The best way I have found to use a tractor with power reverse is to set the hand throttle at a certain level that provides good steering and loader response (maybe 1400-1600rpm or so.) Then apply throttle with the foot throttle when moving, let off the foot throttle when changing direction. This allows you to change direction more gently, but still move more quickly between whatever you are working on.

Unless you are really abusing it with lots and lots of fast, high RPM direction changes the wet clutch will give you no trouble at all.

The rest of your transmission operation sounds right. Shift on the move with the gears, stop for the ranges.

I wouldn't use it to change directions except when using the FEL in a lower gear. Avoid using it in high gear. It has 2 clutches internally, 1 for forward, 1 for reverse. Just like not taking off in a standard car in a high gear.

Keep the mechanism in the dash lubricated and don't slam it into park while still moving or you can break off an internal pawl that is $$$ to replace. These things last a long time with a bit of forewarned knowledge.

If you did not get an operators manaul with the tractor. Here is an online copy.

If you are going forward, you shift it to reverse. It will deal with directions changes up to speeds much higher than your body will like! The general steps I use are let off foot throttle until the rev's drop to idle then pull the reverser and get on the throttle again. Its ok in high range on my MF but it jerks you so bad I usually use the clutch to gently reverse.

Kyle and slowzuki are correct in regard to using the reverser in the higher ranges! You won't like the high G's and while the tractor will do it - probably for many years - commonsense tells you it's probably not a smart thing to do to your tractor...

I am surprised reverse is not locked out in the higher ranges. Who needs to go from 18mph forward to 18mph backwards almost instantly?:confused2:

On my JD 2030 Reverse is on the range stick, so no way you can be in both High and Reverse. The other stick is 1, 2, 3 & 4. When in High range they are 5,6,7 & 8.

On the 6415, It has 4 ranges, 4 speeds and a PowrReverser. I have not even considered shifting into reverse at speed! :D

I've got the sync-reverser which does require the operator to stop before shifting forward to reverse (and vice-versa).
Although the power-reverser does allow you to shift while moving, stopping momentarily will probably extend the life of the mechanism.

Yeah.... that'd be something for YouTube! Or Jackass III! Have to have a tape measure to see how far it would launch your body out of the front seat!

I couldn't agree more. My wife's operation has a CaseIH 5140 with power reverse and they darn near comes to complete stop before changing direction. I know it's meant to handle it without stopping but the tractor weighs about 12,000lbs by itself with weighs and fluids and that's lot weight just to be going along at 5 or 6 mph and jam it into the opposite direction.
