About how tall are power poles?

Huw much does a hen weigh? Sorry- couldn't pass that one up. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Many different heights, depending upon the application.
Sorry can't be more specific than that.

Question was 'how tall', not interested in weight. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Strange question however. Maybe we'll learn more about what is behind the partial question. Must be more to it.

Are you talkin' about the 30-footers or 40-footers? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually, I believe if you are talking about a drop to an electric box, it has to be at least 13' 6" but I always shoot for at least 14' off the ground. I think the main pwer poles are different sizes, but I bet if you are really interested, a call to the engineering dept. of Wise Electric Coop could shed some light on what they normally use.

Yep, the pole that my power terminates too. It's roughly as tall as my trees and I was thinking about building some kind of observation tower in the distant future.

I helped my brother load and haul two 30' poles he bought used from the Navarro County Electric Co-op. As for the pole on which our power terminated and on which the meter and master breaker were mounted, the Navarro County Electric Co-op required a 16' treated pole, minimum diameter on the small end of 6" and installed 4' in the ground and 12' above with the weatherhead even with the top of the pole, 2" galvanized pipe or conduit connecting it to the meter base mounted at "approximately" 6' in height.

Okay, now I'm confused... (nothin' unusual). /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Do you mean a pole with a transformer on it, or a pole that's a drop from the transformer? My pole at my house has a transformer and a drop to the meter and a main breaker down at the 6' level. I believe the pole is 30' tall with about 6' in the ground so it's 24' feet above. Is that the arrangement you have? I'll check my pole tonight by eye-balling the pole in comparison to my house to get a more accurate guess-timate.

That may be, but vigilance for homeland security is exempt and encouraged.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Don't hold me to this but, it should be stamped on the pole.
Some thing makes me think that the stamp should be x amount of feet above the ground and the measurement from the ground to the top of the pole is what is stamped on the pole.

Yeah that's it, homeland security /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Thanks guys, 24 feet sounds about right. Sorry for the confusion Jim, welcome to my world. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Well, I looked at my power pole this morning and it looks like the transformer sits about 24' off the ground and the pole extends up another 6' above that. About 1' down from the top is a insulator mast for one of the wires coming to the transformer. The other wire is about 5' below at the transformer level. I'm not sure how much of this pole is in the ground, but I'd guess there is at least 30' out of the ground.

The main power line poles along my road look to be about 5' taller than my power pole. I thought they would be at least 10' taller, but they just look taller since they don't have a transformer, I think. They may also be buried deeper into the ground, but I think you are wondering about the height above the ground. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Poles are sized by length and class.

A class 9 is about as big around as your calf and around 12 feet out of the ground.

You only get bigger from there in class and altitude. Normal poles along the road with service drops on them are 30-35 foot poles. Figure the telephone ca (bottom attachment) is about 20 feet and estimate from there. Near RR tracks or crossings you are going to find 45-50 foot poles min. because you need a lot more clearance. You can go up to 90's. No, really, you can go up the 90's, 50-60 is plenty for me on hooks. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You building a hunting condo?

Not for hunting, we're on a hill that overlooks a lake. We've got a lot of trees and thought it would be cool to see over all that stuff. Pretty low priority project though, lots of other things in line before that.

RedRocker, I like your idea. I had the same one myself. I know that when they put mine in they said it was a 30' pole. I have a very high spot at the back of my 11 acres here and we are atop the plateau, but a lot of tall 100'+ trees. I had thought about getting 4 poles and build an observation deck on top of them. Keep us posted if you try this.

I'll do pix if I ever get that far. 30' looks about right, my camper parked next to it is about 12' and it looks about twice as tall give or take a few feet.
