Do TBN members post or answer posts just to get stats
Most, if not all, TBNers do not ask or answer posts just to get stats. Occasionally, people will respond with 'I agree' or repeat what someone else has posted but I think that's simply either their habit (they'd do the same thing in a conversation) or they haven't read the entire thread before replying.

However, some might start, or participate in, threads in the Related Topics forum to do this. I've always believed that posts made in the Related Topics and Photo forums should not be counted towards the total post count. This is not to say that there aren't off topic threads in the other forums or that posts in these 2 forums are not valuable, but not counting posts made in forums that are clearly non-tractor related would get the rankings closer, albeit just a little, to a reflection of the quality of posts instead of a reflection of simply the quantity of posts.

Some may, but the majority of members do not. But most post to help others, ask for answers, or to enjoy discussions with their online friends with topics of mutual interest.

I don't necessarily think it is stats, but I think a lot of people just like to hear themselves talk, or in this case read themselves write.

I read through an entire thread before I'll post a response. If what I would normally say has already been said I just pass it up. I often see several replies that are just a regurgitation of the previous replies. Maybe some people want everyone to know that they know something.

Why would this matter?

I suppose someone new to the forums might look harder at a post from someone with a lot of posts, but it's what's said that they will accept or not accept as good adivce. I don't think there are many who count this as a competition, but even if they do, it really doesn't bother me. I can't see the difference it makes.

Pandora, your box is now open. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The post totals aren't accurate now for a number of reasons. Some members have changed names for whatever reasons. I remember that John Miller III used to post under at least two different screen names. Some members' totals were reset to zero in the 'great purge' a couple of years ago (I don't know if they have gotten their lost post totals back now or not). I remember looking at an old post I knew came from Henro (Bill) and the member name was simply listed as 'Poster.'

Another philosophical question on this could be are posts of questions of any more or less "quality" than posts of answers. In that same vein, should answers be graded and tallied accordingly? Maybe a 'degree of difficulty' factor could be added. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I've said before that a lot of my posts have been questions I've asked and then follow ups for clarifications to the answers given. I remember someone chiding me for diminishing the value of my posts here on that basis, telling me that those questions I asked and the answers thereto may have proven an invaluable aid to someone else who read them. It sure made me feel good to read that. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I'm not sure I'd like to know my ratio of questions to answers still, though. I'm just happy to be able to post both here and to read both from others here. This is what I always thought and hoped the internet could be. Enjoy it, numbers or not. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It appears you place a lot of value on the number of posts that are registered. I'm not sure why this number is so important to people.

I would suggest abandoning the post numbering system all together. If people are really bent on having a pecking order than just have a "Member since 01/01/04" indicator. Then emphasis will be on content of posts rather than number.

Incorrect assumption. If I did, I would have stated such.

I'm not sure why this number is so important to people.
Because of what it 'might' imply, i.e., many questions and/or many answers.

How does how long someone has been a member indicate the content of their posts? New members who have either lurked for a long time or have a lot of experience can be a valuable resource immediately.

Mike,

I would like to make a few points on this topic.

(1) I have seen so many replies saying i can't help you with your question because i don't know enough about the subject. -----why reply

(2)I see every day hijacked threads for personal conversation not only is this rude but why can't they---- PM or do they like the stats.

(3) On so many issues the question asked has been answered if 10 times a 100 times so---------- why post it again

(4) I love my tractor but there is a limit to what one can ask questions about, I am convinced many questions that are asked are so trivial they are of little interest to members, other than the ones that simply like to write essays.

I am starting to feel like this could lead to an essay so i will sign of now

Many websites like Slashdot and Kuro5hin use an anonymous ranking method called "Karma". A members rating is based upon some formula of how others rank their posts.

I am not advocating this method over the straight post counting, but it is another way of doing it.
