Borrowed a post hole digger , it didn't work well. After 30 mintues maybe got 2' deep.

Questions. What is the average timeto drill a 3' hole in decent soil. Does the bevel on the cutting blade go up or down. Where do I get new blades for a worksaver #706109 "9 auger.

Creo... Your issue, I think, is no down force. Takes me honestly about 30 seconds to get a 14" hole 4 feet into the ground. And that is going slow. Maybe 10 seconds if I am jamming it and don't hit anything....

3PT style post hole diggers have no down force. You can of course change out the edges and tips, but I think your issue is needing downforce. Lots of ways to accomplish this.

Depends on the soil also. We have good soil here but when it gets rock hard during a small drought a gravity PHD doesn't work well. Neither does it do well in rocky ground.

Same here. Attempting to drill a hole in the summer is a futile waste of time; sharp blades or not, as is plowing.

Yup. Ordinary semi-moist soil, no problem. Dry clay, caliche - fagedaboudit.

Spanking new cutter tips and auger point will do you well, for the first six inches. Same as cutting dirt with a chain saw. Instant dull.

Somebody told me a concrete block can help with the down pressure issue. Not to put the block on the auger, but to put it on the tractor seat because of the PTO weight-on-seat switch. But I don't know about that.

Just remember, no loose clothing on anybody in the crew working around a rotating shaft - even with the outer safety sleeve over the shaft.

A down force kit will take care of pretty much all ground issues. Cobble and large roots is another story. I can drill a 24" diameter hole 4' deep in less than 3 minutes in ground so hard that it takes water days to soak in. That is at an idle, drilling properly going down 12", raise, down 12", raise , 4 times to have the hole 4' deep.

Thanks everyone for the info, I have used a gas powered post hole digger and that thing dug fast. I'm suriprisedd the 3 point has so many issues.
