Posthole Digger Post Hole Digger

I have just talked to the president of my community. He told me that a person that lived down the road was putting in his own vineyard. He needed somebody to dig 200 post holes 12" wide and 18" deep. They were already marked in rows and just needed to be done by April 8th. The president has his own tractor but didn't have the time to do the work so he said that he knew I might be interested. I don't have a post hole digger but have been wanting one and what time but now. I will make at least $500.00 probally more. Depending on what I charge. What brand of post hole digger should I go with? I was thinking either woods or Befco. What size? I know that I need a 12" bit. Who has a post hole digger?

Any idea what the digging is like? If it's soft soil, you can probably get away with something fairly inexpensive. If it has a lot of rocks, you'll want something heavy duty, and possibly hydraulic.

I've got a Woods 1160 that I've used in rocky clay soil and it works well.

There's a lot of info on this board regarding various units if you do a couple of searches.

It is rocky soil. It isn't to deep so it shouldn't be bad at all. What did the Woods 1160 Post Hole Digger cost you?

I can't give a specific number because it was worked into the package deal with the tractor. Actually, I had originally asked for the 1130, which is a lighter duty unit. However, the 1160 was "only a bit more" so I went with that instead.

I would guess that the 1160 with a 12" double flight auger (the package I bought) was somewhere between $750-$900, but again, it's hard to say 'cause I didn't have the dealer itemize the accessories.

It is a good, strong unit. Other companies have basically the same design, so you might be able to shop around a bit.

I've seen cheaper units for much less, but our soil is rocky and I'd rather pay a bit more and not worry about breaking anything.

Hopefully others on this board can chime in with some better price info than I can give.
