Posthole Digger Post Hole Digger - How big an Auger

How big an Auger can you mount on these units. I have a TC-55 with 45 PTO HP. Is it a matter of height, width, power?

I have saw on Northern Tools site a model that mounts on the loader and I presume uses a hydraulic line from the bucket?

Anyone know the low down on all this?


I am not putting up a fence (although that is always an option). I do a large amount of Landcape work and am interested in augering some larger holes.

I just recently used a borrowed PHD with a 12" auger on my JD4100. It's only 17PTO HP and handled the 12" with no problems at idle speed.

I'm guessing that 18"-24" wouldn't be any problem at all for your machine.

You should be able to run a pretty big auger with that tractor. the hydraulic drive variants will have their own limitations, ie the hydraluic motor size/gearing and how much pressure/flow you have going to them.
Another consideration is the type of soil you are augering in. When I lived in FL I believe I could have ran a 24 inch auger with 12 HP, mostly sand there. But back home in KY it is another story altogether with the rocks and heavy clay.

Forgive me if it look's like I'm hi-jacking the thread, but I have post hole digger question.

Are the connections between the auger bits and power heads standardized, at least for the smaller PTO driven units generally mounted on compact tractors? I am considering buying one but the folks with the best prices for the power unit don't seem to have the best prices on augers /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

There are several sizes for the larger units. There are 2" diameter Round, 2 9/15" diameter Round, and 2" Hex available. You can see augers with different size spindles at Danuser. Of these, the 2" Round is the most common.

I'm not sure of the smaller "Tractor Supply"-size smaller units.

We spin an 18" auger on our 34 or so NH 1925 and it works pretty well, I am sure I shear an appropriately larger number of shear bolts as well.

We dig 3 holes in a triangle and then dig between them with a shovel to plant trees. (My wife is a landscaper)

No to the other gentleman, the augers are certainly not all the same, and you are getting different things for the different prices. Just like when you go to Lowes and want a drill bit, different qualities, different styles, different materaials, different mounts (even more so on the mounts) Sometimes the cheapest auger is the best, and sometimes it is not.
