I have recently purchased a BX1870 and am thrilled with it. I would like to purchase a PTO powered post hole digger that is capable of 48" deep holes. Is that possible with size of tractor? I have seen a few PHD that I know will work but they only had around 32" augers.

I used a buddy's Leinbach "Jr." on my BX. The Jr. is sized for subcompacts. I checked their site, and they state all augers are 48" long, except the four inch diameter model. I can't remember if I was able to lower the 3PT hitch low enough to make use of the entire length, but I think you can. Worst case, you'd have to adjust linkage halfway through drilling, maybe?

Our ETA Compact Tractor Post Hole Digger is made for subcompact tractors like the BX.
They come with 48" augers, so you should get close to the desired depth.

LOL, I was just going to correct my post... I realized that when you click the link for Jr. on Leinbach's site, they send you to Everything Attachments' site. I do know it's a quality PHD. Two of us guys borrowed it from the owner, digging enough holes for a few fenced pastures/lawns. When I had it, I completely trashed the auger and bought the owner a new one. I probably broke half a dozen shear bolts before the holes in the auger shaft were so elongated that it was tearing up the bolts under normal load.

Thanks Ted. I received an email from Rick from your site, he thought 48" might be tough to do with my tractor. He was thinking 36-39" at most. Might mean readjusting the 3PT as I dig as Jesse is suggesting? I need 48" in my location to get below the frostline.

Leinbach went out of business last summer. I have a Leinbach (don't remember the model, think it was the middle sized one, got it used from a friend & it had very faded stickers) for my L3200 & it barely fit, the bottom of the augur would usually drag even when fully raised & properly adjusted. Now moot as I chopped it up to make it QH compatible http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/327212-quick-hitch-3-point-hole-5.html#post4004229, but I was going to weld extensions onto the arch to make it taller. A taller arch would have given it more lift, although could limited the depth, depending on the 3pt size & geometry.
I believe Ted mentions a taller arch in one of the ETA PHD videos for better compatibility with modern smaller SCUT tractors. Sounds about like what I was thinking about doing more or less.

Upon further thought, adjusting linkage "may" work,but it would probably be quicker and safer to finish the hole manually. Trying to realign with the auger in a fixed position would probably result in cursing and bashed fingers. How many holes do you need to drill?
There's a pic of a BX 1500 on EA's site. I wonder what length auger is in that pic?
More like 10s of holes as opposed to 100s. Cleaning them up by hand would be feasible.

The auger in that pic is a 48". It's really hard to tell what the exact depth will be. Some tractors will bury the auger up to the gearbox, but some do not have enough travel.
For max depth, I'd adjust it so you barely have it off the ground or slightly dragging when your lift is all the way up.
