You want to see some easy digging soil, check out this related video:
YouTube - Drill Driven Posthole Digger

Must have softened it up with the Awesome Auger :D
https://www.buytheauger.com/

Is he using a Horrible Fright drill in that YouTube video. I'd like to see him do that with our claycrete.

Got mine stuck nearly as deep once also. I set the 3 point hitch to pull up and slowly turned the shank of the auger backward with a pipe wrench. It actually worked smoother than I imagined.
That wasn't nearly as fun as the time I hit the 1 inch copper village water line to my house!

Unfortunately when mine was buried, there was no auger visible to get a pipe wrench on. Knock on wood, I was nowhere near any utility lines with my happily departed PHD.

Now that would make a great YouTube! Watching a small engine auger run itself deep into the ground. I don't think we will find any volunteers to do it purposely for the camera.

Having clay-rock ground and a Stihl BT121 (if i remember right) i too wonder..

The BT is similar to the handheld pictured. to answer your question; i would prefer the handheld as that one will stop drilling once it hits and object an the inertia safety handle blocks the gearbox.

So no augers pulled all the way down for me.

The initial device would simply rotate on itself every single hole you want to drill. No use.

With a zillion vineyards here the locals have 3pt or skidsteer PHD's with a conical auger just and only because of the rocky soil and the problem of pulled-in augers.

Where i live you wont dig more then 2 or 3 posts by hand and you will be asking for a beer and the rest of the day off. I have about 8 inches of top soil and the rest is hardpan clay.

I have a little 2stroke hand held auger that does good just takes time. Also ever 8 or 10 inches you have to pull it back up other wise your stuck.

At one point i couldnt get my tractor auger in to where i was working, and didnt have a hand held i rented one with the engine mounted on a cart. Well I got the auger caught around a rock and couldnt lift it out of the hole. I was setting 8inch post was drilling 12inch holes for crete. I had to use the loader of the tractor to pull the thing out of the hole. There was no way i could lift it after it was so deep. 14 holes in one day and i was done, i couldnt hardly lift my arms to load the thing in the truck to take it back to the rental store.
