I rented a 3pt post hole digger and was glad I did before buying. It was worthless for me.. I have lots of rocks.. I repeat LOTS OF ROCKS.. from fist sized to as big as volkswagens.. and the auger would go down a few inches and then either seize and bust the shear bolts or dance around on top of the rocks.
The rental guy told me he hears about that alot in our area.
I'm told the hydraulic power-down models with special rock cutting bits work much better, but they require more PTO horsepower than I have.
I'd love to borrow one of the machines the utility crews use to sink power poles in our area.. they go through anything.
