Well, it's not a tool, but I was happy to hear that Lincoln Logs are coming back to the USA to be made in Maine. The company is reportedly not going to raise their prices as a result.

That's awesome! And when the kiddies chew on the logs they won't risk potential poisoning! (0:

Had not thought of that, but very good point.

We had a large Sears store close recently in the mall. End of an era. Sears once dominated everything... Now are quickly going down hill.

To cheapen their tools was the last thing they should have done. They must have terrible management. The founders must be rolling in their graves.

I think SEARS loses a ton of money on their return policy. I saw a pile of returned tools behind the counter once and I asked the clerk what are those. He said, returned tools. I said they look fine, he said they were all good but people use them and then return them.

Had the same thing happen at Home depot. I was looking for a post hole digger, I looked over and saw one with mud still on it from being used hanging on the rack. Funny part was they regional manager was standing right there taking inventory with his crew. I was with my life and I started laughing so hard I almost wet myself. I grabbed the post hole digger and showed it to the manager with tears on my eyes from laughing saying things..." ya I wanna return my post hole digger it doesn't work" mimicking the person who returned it. The managers eyes got as big as saucers in front of his crew of clerks. Then I asked the wife to take a picture as no one would believe me as I was still laughing as the manager was steaming at this point.
HE asked if I still wanted it as it was perfectly fine excerpt for the fact someone bought it dug a hole returned it with the mud still on it.

I said sure - I asked doesn't this ****** you off to see this? He said you don't even know how mad I am right now, he said normally you can't shut me up but right now I'm speechless.

He proceeded to give me a ticket for $5.00 to purchase the backhoe. I thanked him and said he made my week . I left saying I bet I know what tomorrows staff meeting will be about.

A notable exception to the USA's import laws is the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, which is allowed to use the "Made in USA" label on their products and export them to the USA duty-free.

I agree that people abuse the policy. There was a thread on TBN a while back where someone found a set of Craftsman tools on the highway that fell off a truck. They were dinged up from hitting the asphalt. They guy took the tools to Sears and got a new set. First of all, they were not broken, second, the guy didn't even buy them. It is one thing if the item can go back on the shelf and be sold, but quite another thing if it comes out of the store's pocket. That just drives everyone's costs up. Some people have no conscience.

That's bad management by Sears to let that happen! I agree... Many people have no conscience. )0:

This kind of action pisses me off... I have used a lot of craftsman tools over the years and have only maybe once or twice had to return a tool. One time was a ratchet, but rather than giving me a new one, they just gave me the guts and I repaired it myself. I was sort of disappointed at the time thinking I would get a brand new tool but in hindsight, it was totally fair and I have that same ratchet 20years later.

I don't think Sears is going under only because of their warranty policy

Though sadly I have seen how policy has changed. At one time ALL the simple hand tools like shovels and rakes that carried the Craftsman name were unconditionally warranted against breakage. That's the total reason every single yard tool I ever bought carried the Craftsman name and actually was pretty amazing considering it covered the wood handles too. (think of all the bozos that tried to lever out a large rock with a shovel or left one outdoors to constantly weather).

Now its just the fiberglass handled tools that are covered. Interestingly enough not too long ago when I did have a wood handle crack on me the on I was told by the on duty sales person to take a fiberglass handled one as a replacement unit.

On the other hand at another time in my life I had purchased several "catalog only" tools, sets only available thru the catalog. I don't even know if they even have a tool catalog anymore but the obviously it was a way to try to dispose of some stuff that either were factory seconds or returns. I had never seen so many distorted wrenches twisted or warped even most junk from China is better looking these days. The local store refused to make good on anything that came from the catalog and I eventully gave up trying to get the bad pieces replaced though they gave me another entire set it didn't make much difference. ;)

Seems like its time for a different thread like "what should you expect from a warranty" ;)

I like Craftsman tools and bought way more than I really need before they started making everything in China. Craftsman is sold in outlets other than Sears stores so it should survive even I Sears stores do not. I bought a Diehard battery on Saturday, I have always had good luck with them and some of them are made here.

Me too. I think most all of my Craftsman is US made including my dad's 10in radial arm saw from the early 60s! I can't seem to part with it even though it is just taking up valuable space in my cramped garage/shop!
