Possums are tough to kill with a .22 cal. head shot because they have very small brains and are good at "playing possom". After having several "dead" possoms run off as I walked away after delivering a single head shot, now I always give them one shot in the head and a second behind the shoulder thru the lungs. The 2-shot treatment works every time. Another critter that requires special treatment is the skunk. I have found that a 16 or 12 gauge load of no 6's delivered to the head from a mod. choke from about 15 yards upwind puts them down before they can release their scent.

The Dog or the possum??

The thing was still very much alive so I put him in a 5 gallon pail and called our animal control officer, aka dog catcher.
After half an hour of him crappin in that pail and wallowing around in it, the animal officer was not to thrilled to have to put him in his van, which I know he takes home for some personal use.

Ya know I have spent a good bit of time shooting in my time. But very little shooting animals.

This afternoon I went out and setup a few targets to check the ole aim..
should have taken a picture of the target, I'll do that tomorrow...
15 shots (5 standing, 5 kneeling, 5 sitting) ~40 feet under 2 minutes.
stock metal sites..
All but 1 in a 3 and 1/2 in grouping.

So with a one shot one kill, mode I am positive I could do it..
And with a spray and pray method, I could do it too!
BUT that dang possum well he was evil!!

Reminds me of an ole Master Gunnery Seargent I worked for...
But that is another story!

They wander in on their own and will wander off on their own with less trouble than all this.

1. If he comes back, what would the game warden say if I shot and burried him? Since Possums are short lived anyway why would it matter..

How would the warden know???

You don't have to bury them. Lay them in the middle of the road and feed the crows. JC
