I had a request for information on how this position readout was made so will "make a stab at it". I used scraps on hand but the material could be ordered.

The piece of angle is 1/8" x 1/8" x cylinder stroke length plus about an inch:

The flat is 1/2" x 2" aluminum flat cut to 3" length:
Order Aluminum 6061 Rectangle in Small Quantities at OnlineMetals.com
Adhesive back tape measures can be had from a number of sources such as:
Adhesive Backed 12' Steel Measuring Tape Left to Right | eBay
The aluminum flat is bored to fit the cylinder rod and about 1 3/8" from the end. Two holes drilled each 7/8" off center of the bore for 1/4" x 1 1/2" hexbolts.
Two drilled and tapped holes for #10-24 screws in the corner at 7/16" from the corner.
A V-shaped notch to fit the cylinder rod could be sawn into each half after splitting otherwise the flat is sawn to make the two halves after all the other machining is done.
Lots of different ways the indicator could be made. Basically need something to clamp to the cylinder rod with a scale attached.
