A several years ago during a snowstorm when there was a power outage some older friends of mine ran a generator outside their house. I think it was 5-10 away. When their son could not reach them by phone he came by to make sure they were OK. Both were passed out on the floor. The husband who was in his 80's died. The wife, a little younger and in better health came out of it OK. It looked like the carbon monoxide came in through vents. Pretty hard to know how air is going to be moving in and out of vents, etc. so I guess the further away the better.
Father-in-Law and I suffered a carbon monoxide poisoning last year while working on his truck in the garage. For some reason, the engine was producing about 10 times more carbon monoxide than usual and we were gassed in just several minutes. He had to go to the hospital for several hours to be treated. I now have an exhaust hose that can be run outside. Everyone runs a vehicle in the garage for a few minutes at a time while running tests, etc, but this time could have been deadly.

About 15 years ago my business was in front section of a garage run by idiots. One winter day I hear a motor reving...some guy working on a car with doors shut. There was a window in connecting wall so I could see it.
I started getting a splitting headache so I called 911. I explained what was going on, how I was getting sleepy...then I heard sireens. Fireman walks in with this expensive looking CO monitor...he helped me outside...he said level was too high to read, off the charts.
Fire department took pictures and shut garage down.
Last I talked to fire marshal he said right over his desk he has a picture of that garage. In middle of picture is a kerosene heater, on either side is an open 55 gallon barrel, one filled with used motor oil, other with old gasoline.
