If you are close to Hickory, I would think you could go down to Catawba and walk the railroad spur to the Power plant and pick up loose coal along the sides of the track there. You dont find as much loose coal now as you used to could. They have went from bottom dump rail cars to rotating the cars to dump from the top. The new cars dont have any bottom doors that would crack open and spill out. I still see little piles of coal along the rail line every now and then, I suspect from a over filled car.
