I have worked under this so called Misconception for a LONG time. :laughing:
Worked in a number of Car Dealerships and Repair Shops, and we ALWAYS put a 2x6 under a battery, charging or not, we actually cut 2x6 for that exact purpose. :drool:

Hearing that some thought it to be a misconception, I'm thinking it may have been the older batteries that had the problem, Lead Acid can do funny things, and the newer designs had taken the discharging into consideration. As stated within the above Quote, new designs didn't change anything. :confused2:

For what it is worth, I will continue to use my precut 2x6's as platforms for batteries, charging or just sitting there. :cool2::dance1: :drink:

I gave the most likely explanation about 700 posts ago, with links to the reasons. 40-50 years ago it was very true.

I hate to tell you, but the 2X6s cut specifically for that purpose, weren't even 2x6s. Don't believe me, measure them, well I guess it's a bit late for that.

Depends on how old the 2x6 is. Hey, but at least if the battery is covered with acid, at least the 2x will protect the surface.

I am pretty sure that everyone but those hiding in mommys basement know that "2x6" is a nominal name for a piece of lumber.......

Getting back to the original topic; I’ve had several people argue that you can roll start a vehicle with an automatic transmission if you get it going fast enough.

From what I understand it depends on the transmission. Some in the past had a pump in the tail section and could actually be roll started. If it does not, I don't think you can ever roll start it and make the flywheel move enough to spin the engine over. I think the old powerglide could be roll started.
