Popping J.D. 1010 Deisel

I have a 1010 that I aquired and have done steering repairs and u/carrige work to and now want to sell. Problem is the engine starts fine but pops and farts til it is warm and even then pops. If I work it hard it runs fine under a good load but pops a bit when idled down. I did compression test and all 4 cyls were 325-350 and had the injectors rebuilt. Inj guy says this was common on this engine as J.D> had timming issues. Any thoughts??? I don't want to try to sell it until I can say the popping is normal.

Could it be this is very susceptible to water in the fuel?

Normally, water drops would cause a miss. Maybe on some engines, the water drop explodes and causes a popping.

I'd be inclined to change the fuel filter.
