Poor Mans Fuel pump

There are lots of people have been killed airing up tires. That was exspecialy true of the split rim days. There are cages made for airing up tires.

Air in a non pressue rated vessel is just not the way to go.

Try doing that in an industrial situation and watch those "Dreaded Safety Police" swoop down!

I can see how filling up a split rim tire can kill a person. The projectile is a heavy piece of steel with a lot of pressure behind it. If this tank were to blow apart I understand that there would be fuel everywhere but get killed? I guess that I could throw a blanket over the barrel to stop the piece of plastic that will projected if an "explosion" were to happen.

When I was a kid my neighbor made a pitching machine with a 55 gallon drum, tractor inner tube, pvc tube, large gate valve, and a vacuum sweeper fan/motor. He would allow the innertube to expand with the pressure and release it with the gate valve. He found the design in popular mechanics magazine. It would throw a baseball about 45 mph and I would guess the pressure to be around 10 lbs based on the swelled innertube. I guess that the inner tube portion served two purposes, to see when to fire the ball and to act as a pressure relief and fail before the barrel.

I am very careful and let such a small amount of air to flow that I am hardly pressurizing the tank. This is not a tool that I would allow anyone without knowledge of physics operate.

Does everyone put their tires in a cage when they inflate them on the farm?

Here is where I got the idea, they are sold at harbor freight:

Note that that pump has a safety preasure release valve on it in addition to the preasure regulator. It's the little brass thing hanging off the left side of the head.

People have been killed airing up tires (a sort of pressure vessel), fueling vehicles, airing up portable air tanks, welding, etc, etc. I realize maybe not the best option, but he said "poor" mans fuel pump. He is just sharing an idea that he came up with. So what is off limits? I guess maybe the moderators should just delete a post like this, or how crazy of an idea does it have to be before it's deleted? Just curious.
Reminds me of my first week workin' at the local truck stop. I was told how to change a tire on a split rim, stand on the springy part. Nowadays the real safety police (OSHA) makes you put the danged things in a cage, all because some folks didn't know how. Try and find a tire shop with one of them cages.

Better yet try and find a tire shop that will handle split rims nowadays.:D

If you ever do get the slime in your polly drum try using a mixture of paint thinner and acetone 50/50 and it will clean it. I wound shop rag around a 1x1 stick and made a giant Q-tip with duct tape for a scrubber. My polly drum and inside of the pump was a mess after a 3 year fuel hiatus

Wow. This has gotten pretty serious.

Slime. Poly Drum. Paint Thinner and Acetone. Duct Tape.

I'd be real concerned about a visit from Homeland Security.

Before I tried any of that, I think I'd move off the planet, or at least to Canada -- where my our friend Red Green might make you a celebrity at the Possum Lodge. (Possum Lodge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Interesting posts but I thought a poormans fuel pump was a siphon hose AKA "Georgia credit card."
