Poor Man\'s Air Conditioning

For the last few years, my wife and I have been debating on what to do with our patio. It has a westerly exposure, so it is unbearably hot in the afternoon. Just about the time we'd want to use it, of course!/w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif

We talked about building a screened in porch, or building a purgola over the patio to give it some shade. We also discussed putting up one of those retractable awnings.

Well, we finally decided to look into getting an awning. We didn't want to sink a lot of money into the house, since we plan on selling it in the next 3 years. So I called a buddy of mine who owns an awning company and had him come out.

Our patio area measures about 17 x 17, and when he saw that, he said forget the retractable. For one reason, they only come out 12' from the house. Besides that, they are so sensitive to the wind, that they have to be retracted in anything much over 15 mph. And because of the way they're designed, they can't be out in any kind of heavy rain. It puts too much strain on the support arms.

So, that pretty much left us with no choice but going with a fixed awning. I've attached a picture. It completely covers the patio, and as you can see, it has wings on each side. We can even add zip-on screening in the future if we want. And because we have it covering our patio doors going into our dining room, it has cut our air conditioning bill by at least 5%. We're actually setting the thermostat at a warmer temperature but maintaining the room temperature we want because we don't have the sun pouring in through all of that glass.

What did it cost, you ask? Well, the whole thing went for about $2,100.00 installed. And that includes having the company come every fall (when we call them) and take it down and store it for us and then put it back up every spring. That's standard service with any fixed awning they sell. If we had gone with a retractable, it would have only been 12 x 17, and it would have cost about $3,000.00.

So far, we are delighted with this awning. We just hosted a large family gathering last weekend, and had about 25 people. I think everyone was out under the awning enjoying the shade. I know we wouldn't have been out there without it!

If you're looking for an inexpensive way to dress up your home and add a little more "living" space, take a close look at doing something with an awning. You might be pleasantly surprised!!/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Re: Poor Man\'s Air Conditioning

Hang on, does the sun set in the West up there too? I thought we were ....... ahh....... doesn't matter /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Yes shading of windows is what it is all about. All our "Old Queenslander" homes here were designed with verandahs right the way around the house to shade the walls. lKept things cooler.

Then everyone builds in the verandahs on wonders why the houses are so hot !!

Funny having to put the awning away every year. Is the snow the reason?

Cheers

Yep, snow is the reason! It doesn't do nice things to soft material like awning canvas./w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Re: Poor Man\'s Air Conditioning

If your humidity is low enough you may want to tie-wrap a mister hose across the front beam to add a little more cooling in the afternoon.

Re: Poor Man\'s Air Conditioning

Glad you are happy with yours. I have a retractable (about 4 years now) and didn't pay near $3,000 for it. Without looking it up, I know it was under $1,000. It will stand up well in a wind much, much stronger than 15 MPH, and only a big gust recently (which took down big tree limbs) caused it to snap out of kilter (no damage though). Its been a life-saver for us as we too have a deck on the West side. I usually pull it out around noon, and run it back up at night before the dew sets in. Keeps the sun from coming in the living/dining room so it stays cool in there. It stays rolled up all winter, no problem. I may get another section as I have now added onto the house, and will add (lengthen) the deck.

I was tentative about getting one, but have found it to be well worth the money spent.

Re: Poor Man\'s Air Conditioning

When I was a kid we would play baseball in the hot summer sun all afternoon long. When we'd get overheated we would run into the house and stick our heads in the freezer to cool off. That is the closest we ever came to air conditioning!/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Golfgar4,
So I guess you have narrowed your search down to the New Holland. It will look nice parked under that blue awning!

Hot in Wisconsin? Thats a great looking awning, but its so hot here in Texas we have to use asbestes for our awnings.

Beenthere,

Hmm /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif, that's interesting. I wonder what the difference might be? I have to believe my buddy, 'cause he plays golf with me! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Is yours one of the brands you can order direct from a company, or is it custom made? The price he gave me may also have something to do with the fact that the way it attaches to the house had some strange angles because of a bay window that was in the way. Sounds like you got a good deal. Glad you're happy with it! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

GS,

Humidity's been a real problem so far this year. Just the last few days have been really pleasnat, but the weather guessers say the humidity is coming back. Not a bad idea, though. May have to look into it. Thanks. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Spence,

I knew you'd notice! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif When the wife was picking out the colors and she kept going back to the blue, I said that she had been unconsciously affected by the NH brochures I have laying around. Granted, I do have other colors laying around too, but I've made no bones about the fact that I have been leaning toward blue! I don't know about parking underneath it though. Wifey might think it's a little pricey to be used as a tractor storage area! It could clash with her flowers! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Alan,

We have some friends that live in Austin. They think it's a hoot whenever it's hotter here (or colder there), so they call us to laugh. I forget what day it was, but a few days ago they called again to let us know that it was hotter here. I didn't think about asking if the awning had an asbestos lining or not. I'll have to check on that! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Poor Man\'s Air Conditioning

Love the awning. We too, have been trying to get some shade for our deck. I've put in some big trees on the south and east side, but I can't put any on the west end because that's where the septic tank is. Darn, now I have to get an awning. I wonder If I can turn that into a tractor project ? /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif

<font color=blue>"I wonder If I can turn that into a tractor project ?"</font color=blue>

Well, let's see if we can figure this out /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif.

They had to drill 3 holes in the ground - Yup - PHD Tractor Project /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

They needed to use a couple of ladders - Yup - Personal Lift Tractor Project /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

They needed to carry a WHOLE bunch of tools and supplies - Yup - FEL and/or Carryall Tractor Project /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

The only part I haven't figured out yet is how to do the sewing with the tractor /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif

Geesh, I don't even have my tractor yet and I'm conjuring up projects! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Poor Man\'s Air Conditioning

I hear you Gary. Like I mentioned in one of the other replies, it's been very hot and humid here for the last week or so. I agree that the awning doesn't help much in those kinds of conditions, but for just a few minutes, the shade does feel pretty darn good when you first walk under it!

This awning is for the days when the temperatures are comfortable (mid 70's) and the humidity is low, and we can sit out there and enjoy the evening! Fortunately, we have more of those than those hot and humid ones!

Re: Poor Man\'s Air Conditioning

Nice awning. It should serve you well. I have a buddy that has/had the same deal you have. He loves his but the company he bought from went under while the awning was in storage. It took a litttle while to get it back. I hope that does not happen to you. It is a great service though.

Re: Poor Man\'s Air Conditioning

Thanks cj7,

We like it. The company had better not go under! The owner is one of my golfing buddies, I know where he lives, and he wants to hire me and my tractor (as soon as I get it) when he needs to dig post holes for the awnings. When he was erecting my awning, I was watching he and another worker trying to wrestle around one of those 2 man gas powered augers. I kept telling him how easy it would've been if he had a small compact (or sub-compact) with a PHD to do that for him. He says he doesn't know anyone with one. I comment that he knows someone that plans on getting one (I didn't mention that it might be 3 years!/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif). He said that as soon as I got it, he'd hire me for all the holes that he would need to dig for fixed awnings.

So he'd better not go under!! /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif
