I suspect, having done a quick look on Wix, that as odd as it sounds, the oil filter for 1643 isn't readily available after market, which might take jtheise4 back to AGCO anyhow, more than likely. But what are the odds it will be that dealership's parts counter?

Yeah, I checked on the Wix website and saw that they do not make an oil filter for the 1643. I'll probably end up buying an AGCO filter from the dealer that I bought the tractor from. They have EXCELLENT service, but they're 45 minutes from my house. Obviously, there's a reason why I bought from then as opposed to the local dealer!

Thanks for the information. I appreciate it. I agree with you 100%. I used to work in retail and some of the people who came through the door were complete jerks. I try to treat everyone with respect and hope that people do the same to me.

Do you have the AGCO part number for the filter?

The filter number is 3757038m2.

Call the dealer and see if they can mail the filter to you. I have several customers who live 100 plus hrs away and as a favor to them i ups several parts to them. It cost alittle more but they dont have to drive and they know they will get the right parts. They have been using me for awhile and im hoping it was based on customer service and tech. service.

This filter needs to be changed at the first 50hrs for the breakend period and then depending on how hard you work it about every 100 to 150 hrs.

Actually, my question was meant to be rhetorical. It sounds like $25 is not that out of line, but even if it was, it is not something I would worry about given the price (it isn't $100 or $1000) and how often it has to be changed.

I could argue the same point about factory oil too... but I don't want to go there...

Are dealers more expensive? Sure, sometimes. But my first thought was that a filter for $25 was NOT being sold somewhere else for $8 bucks. You verified that. Is there a price variance between dealers? Sometimes... but not enough to worry about.

Anytime I see a big difference in price, I start to question the quality of the cheaper item... or if it really is compatible.

Also, if you're making money with your tractor, factor maintenance costs into your rates. If your not making money with your tractor, you probably are not putting on the hours fast enough to worry about a $25 oil filter that you KNOW is the right one for your machine.

I agree 100%

Not to defend the rude parts person but as a buissness owner myself I take offense when customers tell me they will go to home depot or lowes or any other place to my face because they find it cheaper. I charge what the MSRP is on locks. No upcharging but I also cant buy in large quantity like these guys can. A simple "no thank you" or an "I can afford that right now" and walk away and go buy it elsewhere. No need to insult the shop keeper either. I know the parts person could have handled it better and didnt need to be rude, But on the flip side when you do need a part that you cant get from autozone or some other retail outlet they will be there to help you so sometimes 7 or 8 dollars more now may help you when you need just information about your tractor such as a parts breakdown or how to tear something down and reassemble.

Guess I never thought about it from that perspective. Point taken.

I know what your saying and it true. I do and have my employees bite there tounge just because i know the customer will need us oneday, and the fact is (If you have a happy customer he will tell a friend but if you have an unhappy customer he will tell 20 friends and so on.)

Is it that bad to tell the business where the parts are cheaper? I never thought about it...

Seems like that would be good info to have. If none of your customers ever told you where they were buying their parts, you wouldn't know why sales were down. I would think knowing that you are overpriced and who is beating your price is good information.

No need for either party to get snotty... but if every customer walks in and tells you that store x down the road is a lot less you would be able to do something about it. Maybe you can't lower your price any, but being able to go to that store and see what is being offered (at the lower price) can provide you with a little "ammo". Maybe it is just a matter of learning about store x's product so you can explain why your's is better or why x's product really isn't compatible.

Heck, one time I was a customer in a similar situation (don't remember what I was buying, but it was a dealer that I was talking to). When I mentioned the price difference at store x, the dealer, instead of taking offense, agreed with my logic and sighed. Said he can't blame me, but he can't lower his price any more to compete. The event made me think about how much money I was really saving and how friendly the dealer was. I ended up giving my money to the dealer.

I totally agree with both points here. I just wanted to point out that this happens often and sometimes an employee or owner in my case looses it from time to time and gives it back to the customer. Its not right but it happens. I had a customer call me every name in the book because I couldn't get to him today but I kept my cool and treated him with respect and kindness, had this happened a few days earlier when I was having the most horrible day ever I may have tore him a new a**h*** right there. Everyone has a breaking point maybe she hit hers that day or maybe she is just a b****. Oh well
