I am refinishing hardwood floors in my house. It looks like when the sandings done, it will be very humid out (and in). Is there a problem putting poly down on boards that have been exposed to heat/humididty?

can you close the house and run the air conditioner while putting down the finish? this will reduce the humidity. or at least start the air conditioner after you put the finish down. one thing i have been disappointed in with my hardwood floors, i didn't read the label well enough, and the finish has an amber tint..it sure changed the color of the floor, i would have much preferred a clear finish.

Just did this 2 months ago. I don't have an air conditioner, but I sealed up everything and had a dehumidifier and a bunch of oscillating fans running. Even with this set up, forget about the "dries in 24 hours" the label says. Sure, it felt dry after a day, but if you try to sand too soon, it will gum up and deposit a nasty, poly-based blob on the floor. It took about 2-3 days until I could sand properly.

You might consider a water-based urethane for floors. They tend to remain clearer (not yellow with age) and are forgiving during application. Make sure you use a product made for floors, whether water or oil based.

When we did our floors and woodwork the guy that I got the finish and sealer from said that it had to be absolutely dry before we applied it. If we applied it with alot of humidity in the air then the wood would retain the moisture and rot out from the inside. We did, however, get a new sealer from MinWax that is water based and doesn't smell. I was a little skeptical but it has held up really well with no problems. It was a whole lot nicer than using the old polyurethane I can tell you that.
