I don't think I'm hijacking this but a related question- I am getting ready to build a pole shed for hay storage and have 12-15 20'-30' telephone poles that are 18-20" in base diameter. My thought was to quarter these after cutting to length (a friend has a bandsaw mill and can do this gratis). Any thoughts on diminished longevity doing this? If I need to start a new post with this, please let me know.

Depends on size of shed, 6x6 min 10' spacing. DONT cut to length yet, depth of holes change and you want to get the poles leveled and tamped in place. then use string, water level or laser level to set the post height where you want the barn floor height to be from the trusses.

Cutting them FLAT on 2 sides is recommended to make it easier to put girts onto them and if you eventually ever want to nail to them.
