Pole barn success!

/ Pole barn success! #21
I'm working on ordering gravel for the inside. I'm getting some for a parking pad/ driveway by the house, figured I could do this at the same time. Any particular notes? He has a 15 yd truck. 1 load should give me about 6" depth give or take.
I prefer to get aggregate with the fines still in it, e.g. 3/4" minus, as it packs to a solid base. If you can peel out the top couple of inches of grass to remove the organic matter, it will be even more solid.

I would echo the advice to reinforce the nice shelter that you have built so that it last longer.

All the best,

Peter

For enclosed pole barns I put down 6 mil plastic and then spread #8 gravel over the top. It self compacts and is a nice surface for vehicles, tractors, walking, etc, but not very good if you have to roll around stuff with small tires (ie, push mower). You can put down rubber stall mats or wood on top of that if needed.

For open pole barns I tend to use crusher run, just realize it can be a chore to compact it with tractor tires when you're working around the confines of poles and walls (ie, can't get the tires to roll over all of it), plus the fines will create dust that never goes away. If you could rent a plate compactor that would solve the first problem, and if you can water in the fines a couple times, that would help with the dust.
