Looking4new - Ha, ha. I sure don't think St Patty had anything to do with the snakes here. The local legend says the snakes will not cross the railroad tracks. The RR tracks are about 2 miles south and run true E-W. This is pure bull as far as I'm concerned. However - I've never seen a poisonous snake North of the tracks where my property is and the country is sure full of Western rattlers South of the tracks. Its a lot more likely that the snakes simply hop an East bound freight when they get to the tracks.

I ran into my first snake of the season yesterday. Went to the house and got a pistol which I much prefer over a hoe. It was just a little copperhead but none the less it's dead.

With the nice weather I'm going to try to remember to carry a pistol for a while. My dogs use to alert me if a snake got close to the house by standing a ways away from the snake and barking, but they've gotten old and now they don't even scare then Mailman. The incident yesterday will keep me alert as I hate snakes.

I like that answer. East bound freight.

I saw this guy in my pond on Easter. Does anybody know what it is?

Eddie

Not sure Eddie, but I'd probably keep a 12 gage handy. An old rule of thumb, water mocassins typically float on top of the water like this picture. Many of your non poisonous will swim somewhat submerged but with their head above water.

They swear we only have copperheads as a venomous snake hear on the Eastern Shore, I have 6 rattles and a button that says otherwise. I was raised in northeastern NC and there we had copperheads, at least 3 rattler species, cottonmouths and coral snakes.

Yellow jackets are out too. I went to grab a PTO shaft and noticed a yellow jacket inside it on look out for the nearby nest. Glad I saw it.
