Hi all!

Short of donning an environmental suit and digging it up, how do I get rid of poison ivy? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I've got it near my gate and encroaching where I'd like to have lawn. I've got 18 acres, 70% wooded w/ scrub oak, summac & cedar in OKC area. To keep me on my toes I also have wild blackberry (3 jagged leaves) and virginia creeper (5 leaves).

Thanks!

Original Roundup works fine. This is the time of year to nail it, too. We used to have it with dinner-plate-sized leaves! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

just remeber even if you kill it can still bite you....Someone out here warned me not breath around if you burn it.....

I fell for you my old house had it mixed in with the regular stuff we planted.... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif My dogs would wallow in it then want you to pet them /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I think at least one did it in purpose /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

But I to have used round up with good results.
Best of luck....

If you want a non chemical way, Find a neighbor with some llama's and invite them over. Llama's love poison ivy. Cleared a 100ft fence line of PI in just a week.

I sprayed RoundUp on my poison ivy about 1 1/2 weeks ago. After one week it didn't look as if it was working. But another 4 days and most of the ivy is withered and looking really bad.

As I wasn't sure if the RoundUp would work, I had brought along a sprayer full of Ortho Brush B Gone. I hit them again with that.

Hmmmm.

There's a place a couple of miles down the road that has both Llamas and camels. I wonder if they would rent one out.

Thanks.

All,

Thanks for the replies.

I had heard that you could get poison ivy in your lungs if you burned it. I had also heard that even if the vine dies, the oil is still in the dead plant. So, what do you do with the stuff?

We use Walmart bags. Turn 'em inside out (hand inside, and pull the ivy . Turn bag rightside out when full and tie off. send to local landfill with rest of trash.

We have a few patches of that stuff at my place - and I am *highly* allergic to it owing to the fact that 20 years ago I mowed (with a push lawnmower) a huge patch (20ft x 30ft) of the infernal stuff in my short pants.

At the time, I did not know what it looked like. Now - I can spot it from 50 yards /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

RoundUp is effective, though for best results mix your own and make it a double.

I'm taking methylprednisolone right now because I hit some with a weed eater (it was hiding under some weeds, I swear!) and got it on me.

Yes, the urusiol inflammatory oil remains even after the plant is dead - best to stay away and let nature dissipate in in a few months.

But the Sendero Wildlife Habitat has a strict anti poison-ivy policy - I've killed about 2/3s of it and won't rest until I've killed all the plants old enough to see. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
