I have to redo some poorly done plumbing under my house. I wish I had a picture or two to share to aid in relating the issue. My question is this; for a 4" drain line that is actually in the dirt under my house about 6" I need to tie in 3 feeding 3" drain lines coming in from various directions. Two of them it is easy to use a wye/45 deg. fitting rolled at a 45 deg. up direction. The other is a bit more tricky. Can I lay this wye/45 flat or do I have to also roll the wye up from flat? I hope this makes sense as I know my knowledge is limited enough to make the proper terminolgy a bit hard to understand. Thanks, Rat

I'm not a plumber, but I don't see anything wrong with laying it flat, as long as you don't go beyond "flat" and have it lower than the main line.

I'm not a plumber, but i see no reason why you can't lay the wye flat as long as it's not pitched backwards, If the line your tying into has at least the minimum pitch then the wye will also.
They also have tee-wyes which may help with space constraints.

Laying flat isn't a problem but you do need to make sure you get the Y with the curved sweep instead of the angular one. I plumbed the whole house right before Christmas and consulted a plumber buddy of mine right before I was about to make this mistake. The angular ones are for vertical runs.

Thank You guys, that would be a combo you have pictured, it is similar to a sanitary tee but has the long sweep. You can make a combo out of a wye and a street 45. The advantage is that it allows for some misalignment. I know this only because of reading about it in the Taunton book Plumbing for plumbers. I am not a plumber but often times have to be one when it comes to my own stuff. The more I dig into the book, the more I find what I thought was right, no longer right.

I crawled under my very confined crawl space and replumbed the major amount of the issue. Next is to remove the old orangeburg pipe and replace it with ABS. (we use ABS where much of the East uses PVC). I have 5 different sewer pipe materials, ABS, Orangeberg, cast iron, clay and transite. Its interesting.

The reason I posted a pic of the combo fitting is around here inspectors don't like to see a T on it's side.. It will work on it's side in most cases

thats what you want to use and just make sure its turned upward if only a few degrees
inspectors will usually not pass it unless the middle wye is turned up just a bit
