I need some recommendations on a plug aerator. I dont want a $1000 unit but I dont want junk either.

ALso, does the plug work on weight that you put on it or does the 3 pt hitch hold it into the ground.

Its going on a BX2230.

Matt,

I went with a Kioti aerator, 4 feet wide, was $735. I believe they are mfg by Midwest

web page

I add 8 or 10 concrete blocks on top, each block is about 4 inches wide. Low gear 4wd. I go in one direction and then the other direction, spring and fall.

I also have Herd M96 seeder for fertilizer and lime.

I've though about buying 2 of the 3 ft aerators at Home Depot (the cheapy kind) and rigging them together on a 3PH. I'm just not sure how long they would hold up though, as I'm sure they would not do as well as a heavier unit................

Initial cost would be much cheaper though.......

As a rule, most 3pt hitches do not have down pressure, so you would add weight to the aerator.
Check with sweettractors, a member here who has new and used aerators for sale. Here's one of his pages. Give him a call, he's said to be very good to work with. John

Scrounger,

A 3PH normally only lifts and does not apply down pressure. This is the way it is on the BX and most, if not all, subcuts and cuts...

The weight of the implement (or just the weight of the lift arms & hardware) causes the 3PH to lower...

(I see KiotiJohn is quicker on the draw tonight... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif )

Tom.... how about a picture of the Hurd M-96 spreader. I have a tow behind spreader that I purchased new and cleaned every time I used it and put it away. After 2 years, it is starting to look like a piece of rusty old farm equipment and I can no longer adjust the outlet flow control. It cost me about $750 and is a piece of crap to say the least. The brand is Sirex from Italy.

John..... I purchased my Kioti (Midwest) core aerator from Sweet Tractor and it came in a couple of days. Great people to do business with. Never got around to using it because I was late in getting the lawn in last year. I hope to remove it from the pallet this spring and try it out for the first time. I figure that I got a great deal with the price of steel on the rise, I purchased it at the right time..

I've been looking at his site lately trying to find something to buy just because everyone talks about how good Ken is to deal with. I figured I'd buy something to help support a good dealer, but I haven't seen what I want yet. It'll come though. Let us know when you finally get to use the aerator. I'd like to know how well it does before I buy one. Tiller is next when I get back from vacation in a couple of weeks. John

Do a search for "Core aerator" Here on TBN. You will get a lot of information on them.
Here is a link to a picture showing how I added weight to my 60" Midwest. Click Here

Junkman,

You may need to make a modification to the 3 pt to get enough height to lift the aerator so the cores do not drag when in the transport position.. Here is what I plan to follow for the modification.

web page

Make sure when you add the concrete blocks you install a 2 x 4 wood block to lock the concrete blocks into place. The tray is not wide enough to add one more block. If you hit a bump, the concrete blocks move, fall down on the plug which is turning, stops it from turning, and tears the heck out of your lawn if you do not notice it quickly, do not ask how I know this. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I also noticed you will have to tighten the plugs on the turning wheel after use as they loosen up. I use a screw driver to remove the dirt from the plugs before putting it away. Good time to take care of any loose plugs and to grease it up before the next use.

Ken,
I was on your website and I can't find the core Aerator that Junkman purchased for $425. Do you still have them? What's best method to contact you?

You know that I was going to ask for a picture, so please post one showing the blocks and the wooden block. Thanks Junk.... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think that was for the Herd Seeder , not the aerator.
