Thanks everyone,

A lot of info here, my soil is sandy and I want to till, disk or plow organic matter back in the soil.

I have seen the disks work well but it didn't go very deep into the soil, but then again I don't know what I'm talking about /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I will be planting different types of seeds from Tecomate and Imperial Whitetail, just playing right now to see what works and what the deer like.

I have 7 small plots total, (about 3-4 acres) 4 of them I will plant the $$$ seed in, the other 3 are pure sand and I have been planting oats, buckwheat and rye in them thru the year, and then I disk all the green matter back in to the sand. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It has helped a little but it will take many years of riding the tractor to get a good result, and I'm willing to do all that riding /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I thought about a tiller, but have way too many rocks right now, I would hate to spend the money on a tiller and break it /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Again thanks all /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

what u might consider doing is disk it and then every 2 or 3 years plow it. don't really know if there is any enefit to this, but if in doubt? comprmise!

If you have rocks, a disk is probably the easiest to move over them. A plow might hook on them (or trip) and a chisel plow might pull them up or break a shank. A disk will just make a HORRIBLE noise and ride over them. Other than your heart racing, won't hurt anything!

Good luck,
Ron

Thanks RonR

I have been there with a disk and know that noise /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I pick up the rocks that I can lift without hurting myself, this year I can pick up large ones with the FEL /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I don't sell equipment either and actually tried to avoid sounding "wise" on the subject (have found those making the pretense of being smart invariably aren't /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif). But apparently it was some kind of mistake to use the word "tiller". Nomad, if you're out there, you've baffled me with this also!

Grandad,
I thought you had an excellent point. A tiller would be a little bit of the best of both worlds with only money output for one implement. You can control the depth of tillage with a rototiller plus use it all year long for other projects like landscaping and making as many gardens and flower beds as the Mrs. desires.
I too do not claim to be very smart, but in my short time of reading TBN have quickly learned to skip comments by certain posters. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Why does it need to be disced or plowed?

All the farmers around here don't till anything.

Did I miss something in the translation here? My KingKutter operator manual describes the rotary tiller. What do you call it if not rotary tiller /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

How do they change the soil condition/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
How do they plant seeds /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Let me know /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Yup, that's the right term. Sorry for any confusion here. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif If you trace back through the thread, there is a puzzling comment about people who recommend tillers (like I had kind of done). Probably best to let it pass.
