I already started a thread in the general section for advice on basic features that will suit my needs. I'm looking for a used tractor and I've come across ads for Mahindras, but I don't know a single thing about the brand.

I probably should have been more specific. Here's the post I put in the general section, maybe you all could suggest a Mahindra that might fit my needs...

Hi all.

It's actually my girlfriend Cindy who is buying a tractor and I'm helping her. The truth is it will probably be my butt in the seat most of the time anyway.

Cindy and I moved to 82 acres in SW Georgia about a year ago and split it up evenly, she got 80 and I got 2 (even numbers).

The property has 6 acres of pecan orchard and 14 acres of cotton/peanuts, both of which are leased to neighbors. The remaining 60 acres are mostly Loblolly pine and hardwoods which haven't seen much logging in probably 100 years. There is a creek that runs across the place which is normally considered year-round but this drought dried it up. In a normal weather pattern there are several small drains that run almost constantly. As I'm typing this a logging crew is clearing 6-7 acres of the woods for a pond. The dirt drive into the property continues into the woods for a total length of a little over 1 mile.

We're looking for a tractor that can handle most of the maintenance chores for this land. The orchard is being mowed by the neighbor who leases it, but at 85 years old (still tougher than nails) there is a limit to how long he'll be able to do it.

So that's the line up; pond, road, woods, and orchard maintenance. We're thinking used tractor with a budget of $16-18K. I've already done some research and this is what I'm thinking so far:

40-50 engine HP
4WD
Hydrostatic
FEL
R-4 tires

Not included in that budget will be:

290 series Bushhog or equivalent
Box blade

How am I doing so far?

I'll look into Mahindra on my own, but I thought it would be a good idea to hear from some people who own them. Have any of you converted from one of the "big" brands like green or orange?

Hi
My wife and I bought a new mahindra 3510 hydro with fel and we both just love it. My wife runs it almost as much as me. We have put about 100 hours on it in 6 months! We use the fel alot and it works great, we bush hog with a 5 foot wide one and also works great. Small problems, one that got fixed and one still waiting for on ( waiting till time change when we won't be using it as much!). Price when we bought it this spring was 17,500 with back tires loaded. Hope it helps Tim

The need/want for Hydro keeps Mahindra off your list.... If you can do without that feature.. then that's a whole different story...

I'm confused.

TIMinPa, does your Mahindra have a hydrostatic tranny or steering? I'm looking for hydro trans.

rback33, I see that Mahindra has models with HST, what's the problem with looking at them? I'm looking at use tractors if cost is the issue.

Okay. Only the smaller Mahindras offer HST right? Their website is a little difficult to use...

In the HP range you are looking at Mahindra does not offer HST.

Thanks all. Just out of curiosity do you think I'm looking in the right HP range?

I'd say for what you are planning you could be in the right range. If you could live without the HST give Mahindra a hard look. Staying in that price range for a FWD is going to be tough too. If you look at the 00, or the 30 series Mahindra you are in a utility class tractor not a compact. I believe either one of those Series will do everything you want to do and more.

I have bought two tractors in my life. I thought the first one was too large at 54 hp, until I got used to it and then outgrew it. The 6520 I have now will take a long time for me to outgrow in size and power. More power is always better than not enough.:D
hugs, Brandi
