Please help me identify something!

Hey, folks. Say, I'm having a heckuva time identifying a component I need to find/buy in order to build a motorized trommel/compost sifter. The closest thing I can come up with is "buffing mandrel" or "bench mandrel." Ultimately, what I'm trying to do is run a belt (from a 1/4hp electric motor) to a step pulley so that then I can run a 2nd belt around my trommel (which will probably be made from bicycle rims). What is the name of the shaft that the step pulley attaches to?! It should sit inside some pillow blocks w/ bearings. Is this a jack shaft? Help! Thanks..
