My lovely wife (Linda) belongs to Pogo, a game network online. There is a woman that is a member of Pogo that is very ill with lupus. She lost her dog and companion about 2 weeks ago, and she lives in Sacremento, Cal (hope I spelled that right). She needs another dog but they cost too much where she lives, she has around $400 that she could purchase a dog with. I thought of finding her one here in Kansas and make arrangements to fly it to California. Delta will fly a dog for $250 (I heard but haven't checked for sure). Does anyone know how I could find her a dog in that area? She hopes for a Pomeranian or a Chihauhau, female, 1 year or less old. I'd like to help her out if possible, anybody got an idea? Please respond. Thank you.

My wife also plays the online Pogo. I know nothing about the game, myself.
As far as a pooch...I can definitely feel for the lady. Our dogs aren't dogs...they're our kids.
I do suggest the lady visit a local animal shelter. One can rescue a dog there just by ensuring all the shots are up to date and a token fee.
She can also decide which pup should be her companion.

No pup can replace her departed friend. Every dog has his or her personality and the lady must understand that. When we lost Smedley and got Jule a few months later...we compared Jule to the Smeds. That was unfair to our new "child".

Anyway...that's what I suggest the lady do...

I agree with Roy.
The shelters always have pets in desperate need of a caring home. One caution, does she have local relatives to care for her new pet, should she become unable to do so herself? Someone who is gravely ill may not be the ideal long term placement for an animal. I hope this does not sound too callous, just something to give some consideration to.

If you could find someone travelling to California, they could take the dog as luggage...I don't think it would cost anything. You could put an ad on Craig's list here and also in California to possibly find someone who is travelling between the two destinations.

But, I am inclined to think the animal shelter route is the best way to go, too. It doesn't make much sense to me to buy an expensive dog. They're all good; a mutt can be just as good of a companion as a purebred dog, maybe better.

I live outside of Sacramento. The shelters ALWAYS have lots of dogs, and there are a few rescue groups too. I got my Aussie Sheperd at a shelter 16 years ago; she is still going, albeit very slowly. I would go that route.

It is still not cheap; when I got Sheba, the Placerville shelter had about $80 of fees. They get you for the dog license, and a deposit towars neuter/spay if the that has not been done yet.

I would use the money towards a rescue, of probably a mature dog, and doggie supplies. Since she is sick already, why go through chewing and potty training etc.

As another poster mentioned, consider that a new dog will be an orphan when the unfortunate time comes for the lady.

PM me if you want; I can look up info out here. I am leavin in an hour, and will be out of town till Tueday eve, but can respond after that.

You can also google, or Yahoo yellow pages, for shelters and rescuel use 95662 as a possible zip(suburb of Sac).

I edited my post, the woman I only know as Lacy lives in an apartment & can only have a dog up to 15 lbs as an adult. She isn't on her death bed or near it as (I made it sound) but she can't be in the sun and is on pain meds 24/7. She wants a young dog so she doesn't have to go through losing one in the near future. Why the breed selection, I don't know, maybe someone told her they would suit her the best. RobertN has offered to help out and he lives in the area. (Thank you Robert) She has no car and traveling to shelters would be hard for her to undertake. I know nothing at all about her but she seemed like someone I would really like to help out if possible. She didn't ask for help but I will help if I can. Thanks for the responses.
